Annual training deadline approaching
The Haven online module (part 1) and two active shooter videos in FoxTALE may be accessed through your MyGFU portal. Instructions to complete the training by Nov. 15 were emailed from Darby Thiessen to all active employees on Oct. 30. The Haven and Active Shooter courses are intended for all George Fox employees, both new and continuing. Residence Life is looking for students that exhibit Christian maturity, humility, and leadership skills for our 2018-19 leadership teams. Presently, 66 students serve as Resident Assistants and Assistant Area Coordinators. We are looking for men and women who (a) seek to be stretched and transformed in their leadership roles, (b) value the diversity of our faith community, and (c) desire to invest deeply into the communities flourishing and growth. We would value your suggestions and recommendations for students to be considered for these positions.

We will personally encourage the students you recommend to seek candidacy in our programs. Past and current student leaders have reported that recommendations from peers, staff and faculty are one of the most important reasons they consider these positions. Personal encouragement goes a long way for students, especially for those who struggle to see themselves as qualified for leadership positions.

If you would like to recommend a student, fill out this response form by Monday, Nov. 19. We have moved to an electronic format for recommendations to reduce paper waste and costs.

George Fox University’s School of Physical Therapy will be offering its second annual Health Screening Clinic on Thursday, Nov. 30, between 3 and 6 p.m. in the Roberts Center. Blood pressure, ECG measures, vital signs, flexibility and strength will be assessed, among other tests.

A George Fox alumnus invites the university community to join in the Great Turkey Fumble 5K/1K run this year on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 23. This event is a benefit for Newberg FISH. Last year, the event raised more than $1,900 and 250 pounds of nonperishable food for Newberg FISH.

• Date: Thursday, Nov. 23
• Location: Newberg High School’s football field
• Time: 8:45 a.m.
• Cost: $26; $15 (under age 10)
• All entries receive a free football and T-shirt!

William Penn Honors Program Director Joseph Clair tackles the question head-on in his upcoming lecture, “The Lost Purpose of Learning” on Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Hoover 105. George Fox is once again partnering with Hillsboro Airporter to provide shuttle service to Portland International Airport for Thanksgiving break. Students will be expected to work directly with Hillsboro Airporter to reserve their spot.

Here are the details:

• The cost for one passenger is $65, plus a tip. Each additional passenger is $3.
• Each shuttle can fit five to six passengers. The cost per student is based on the total number of passengers during the scheduled times, so if you can fill one shuttle, the cost per student could be as low as $15 (if you have a total of six passengers).
• Make your reservations more than 24 hours in advance and Hillsboro Airporter can group you together. To reserve your spot, go online to Hillsboro Airporter & Car Service LLC.
• Hillsboro Airporter accepts cash or credit card for payment. Parents can call Hillsboro Airporter with a credit card to pay for their student’s fare.
• Hillsboro Airporter has 24/7 service. It will work with students and their families, putting students together to lower the cost of the fare.

We are pleased to announce a new archiving process for FoxTALE course sites. Course sites older than two years from the current semester will be hosted on FoxTALE Archives, a separate system that will be available continuously to faculty and can be shared with students upon request.

This innovation keeps the login time for all users to a minimum and reduces the list of course sites that users maintain on their customized dashboards.

The FoxTALE Archive will become available at the Dec. 28, 2017 FoxTALE upgrade.

The music department invites the campus community to “An Evening of Jazz” concert tonight (Saturday) at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. The concert will feature jazz trumpeter Clay Jenkins, who will perform with the George Fox University Jazz Ensemble and Faculty Trio.

Clay is an associate professor of music at the Eastman School of Music. He has performed and recorded albums with the bigs bands of Stan Kenton, Harry James, Buddy Rich, Count Basie and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, as well as countless other jazz luminaries.

George Fox students and employees are entitled to one free ticket available with a current university ID presented at the door. Additional tickets are available for purchase at georgefox.edu/concerts.
