Welcome Weekend will be here Aug. 24-27. We are excited to welcome in the class of 2021! If you are available to help students move in or in some other capacity on the morning of Aug. 24, please fill out the volunteer form on the Welcome Weekend Hub at welcomeweekendhub.georgefox.edu. The Hub includes helpful resources such as further information on the schedule, weather contingencies and information for speakers. It also can easily be read from a mobile device.

In addition, if you are able, please plan to attend the Welcome Weekend information meeting on Thursday, Aug. 17, at 10 a.m. in Hoover 105. The purpose of this meeting is to acquaint you with the schedule. We will have 2,000 new people on campus during the weekend, and we want to be as hospitable and helpful as possible as new students and their families transition to this new season in their lives.

Reminder: All-community meeting is tomorrow morning in Canyon Commons

Don’t forget the all-community meeting tomorrow morning (Tuesday) in Canyon Commons. All employees, half time and above, are required to attend (absences must be approved by your vice president). The meeting will run from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and includes breakfast. The program will start promptly at 8:35 a.m., so be sure to get there as close to 8 a.m. as possible to eat breakfast.

Bruin Den closed today through Aug. 23 for construction

The Bruin Den will be closed today (Monday) through Aug. 23 for a construction project. We will reopen on Thursday, Aug. 24. Come visit us in the Bridge Cafe; we will be open starting Monday, Aug. 14, with summer hours of 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Helpful info regarding textbook rental program

Faculty members: Here is some helpful information about how students are saving money by renting their textbooks through the Bruin Store.

  • Cost Effective: Our rental program is better priced and more convenient for students than Amazon.
  • Convenient: Students can highlight and write in rentals. As long as the book is still usable. they simply check in the book by the last day of finals.
  • No Risk: Rentals can be converted to a purchase by simply paying the difference between the rental and retail price.

Fitness Center closes tomorrow at 11 a.m. for maintenance

The Wheeler Fitness Center will be closing at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, and will remain closed for the remainder of the day for necessary maintenance. Pending the length of maintenance, it may be necessary for the Fitness Center to remain closed through Wednesday, Aug. 16, as well. We will keep you updated.

When the Bruins play at home, you can count on a packed stadium. It takes a village to make our football games the success they are, and we’d love to have you join our team of incredible volunteers, the Bruin Brigade. All volunteers will receive lunch or dinner at each game they volunteer, free entry into the game and a T-shirt.

Last call to pick up lost-and-found items

Last call for the lost and found! If you lost something on campus from last April until now, and have yet to pick it up, now is the time to do so! All of the lost-and-found items not reunited with their original owners will be donated to charitable causes on Friday, Sept. 1, to make room for incoming items.

If we have emailed you about left-behind items, please come to the security office as soon as you arrive back on campus to claim your items, as space is very limited!

Mark 2 Ministries, Inc. of Newberg, in partnership with the university’s spiritual and intercultural life and student life offices, invite the George Fox community to an open house celebration at the ministry’s new “Friendship House” today (Friday) and tomorrow between noon and 3 p.m. each day.

The house is located at 604 Brandon Dr., in Newberg. Mark 2 Ministries strives to empower our “friends” (individuals living with disabilities) to live and work in a community environment that values the gifts that each individual offers for the betterment of the whole. The ministry endeavors to do this by providing support services for the activities of daily living, job training and coaching, community inclusion, and social recreation.

Final call for Support Staff and Administrator of the Year award nominations

Have you made your nomination(s) for the Support Staff Member of the Year and Administrator of the Year awards? If not, be sure to do so today! If you have a colleague you believe is deserving of one of these awards, take a few minutes to submit a nomination. This is a chance to honor those who have done exceptional work in supporting the mission and vision of the university.

Remembrance service in honor of Daniel Mellers set for Sept. 5

During finals week our community experienced the tragic death of undergraduate student Daniel Mellers. Due to the timing of his death, the university decided to wait until school reconvenes for the fall semester to host a service in his honor.

The service will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, in Canyon Commons. We will make the date more widely known once the school year begins but wanted employees to be able to save the date, as it may have implications for other campus events and student support needs.

Memorial service for Sam O’Donnell is today at North Valley Friends Church

This past Saturday, July 29, Sue O’Donnell, a faculty member in the psychology department, lost her husband Sam. Many of you know and love Sue and may want to send a note or attend the memorial service. The service will be today (Monday) at 2:30 p.m. at North Valley Friends Church, located at 4020 N. College St., in Newberg.

In lieu of flowers, the O’Donnell family encourages donations to the George Fox Student Fund for those students in need. Donations should be made to George Fox and mailed to 414 N. Meridian St., Box 6256, Newberg, OR 97132. For these gifts, please include “in memory of Sam O’Donnell” in the subject line.
