Campus planning for Monday’s eclipse

Thursday, August 17th, 2017

George Fox will be open Monday, Aug. 21 during the eclipse. Employees may take up to 30 minutes for eclipse viewing without taking personal time off. Please work out the details with your supervisor. Viewing the eclipse can cause eye damage. Take safety precautions and wear approved solar filters or glasses.

Traffic on state highways on the day of the eclipse is expected to be heavy. Employees who are concerned about their commute may request permission from their supervisors to work an alternate schedule or to work from home. Some students will be checking in on Monday morning. Some employees will be providing essential services and will not be eligible to work from home. For more information on travel on the day of the eclipse, see the ODOT website.

Senior administrative staff will monitor the traffic on the morning of the eclipse. If traffic in the region becomes gridlocked, an emergency closure notice would be sent out by 6:30 a.m. You may check the university’s FlashAlert webpage or sign up for alerts to be sent your mobile phone.

Some quick facts about renting textbooks

Tuesday, August 15th, 2017

Faculty members: Here is some helpful information about how students are saving money by renting their textbooks through the Bruin Store.

  • Cost Effective: Our rental program is better priced and more convenient for students than Amazon.
  • Convenient: Students can highlight and write in rentals. As long as the book is still usable. they simply check in the book by the last day of finals.
  • No Risk: Rentals can be converted to a purchase by simply paying the difference between the rental and retail price.

She will debut her studio and have work for sale this Friday, Aug. 18, at The Coffee Cottage (508 E Hancock St.). Stop by anytime between 5:30 and 9 p.m.

Email Mail Services your list of work-study students

Tuesday, August 15th, 2017

It is time to email your list of work-study students to Mail Services. Please email your list to Richard Silver at rsilver@georgefox.edu. This is the list of students who have been given permission to come to Mail Services and pick up the department’s mail and packages.

Also, department lanyards will also be going out in the coming week for academic year 2017-18. Please note: If the work-study student does not have the department lanyard, they will not be able to pick up the mail and packages; no exceptions.

If you have any questions, please contact Richard at the above email address.

Call for stationery orders

Tuesday, August 15th, 2017

Now is the time to order university stationery. The collective order helps keep costs low – the higher the volume, the lower the cost. Consequently, it is most economical to overestimate needs and store a small surplus.

I will be accepting orders through Wednesday, Aug. 23. For order instructions, go to the marketing communications website. Continue to purchase all non-departmental stationery (including “second-sheet letterhead”) through the university’s Print Services.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Danette Newkirk (dnewkirk@georgefox.edu)

Remembrance event for Bonnie Jerke planned for Sept. 23

Tuesday, August 15th, 2017

Bonnie Jerke, longtime director of career services at George Fox, passed away over the summer after a lengthy battle with cancer. She loved the Lord deeply and served George Fox students, faculty and staff very well for many, many years before retiring six years ago. She was a wonderful colleague and friend to many and will be greatly missed.

Bonnie’s friends are organizing a celebration and remembrance of Bonnie on Saturday, Sept. 23, from noon to 5 p.m. at Jaquith Park in Newberg. There will be a potluck lunch at 1 p.m., and those attending are asked to bring a dish to share with others. It will be a “come-and-go” event with a time of sharing after the lunch. Those organizing this event wanted to invite Bonnie’s colleagues and friends from the university community as well. They are asking that people RSVP on Bonnie’s Facebook page under the invite post from Linda Byrd.

Please continue to pray for Bonnie’s family and friends during this time of grief and loss.

Remembrance service in honor of Daniel Mellers will be Sept. 5

Tuesday, August 15th, 2017

During finals week our community experienced the tragic death of undergraduate student Daniel Mellers. Due to the timing of his death, the university decided to wait until school reconvenes for the fall semester to host a service in his honor.

The service will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5, in Canyon Commons. We will make the date more widely known once the school year begins but wanted employees to be able to save the date, as it may have implications for other campus events and student support needs.

Please contact the spiritual life office with any additional questions or concerns (ext. 2320).
