The holidays are just around the corner, and it’s a good time to review some personal safety tips. With finals and term papers looming, it is easy to get distracted and not pay attention to your surroundings, so keep these things in mind:
- Never walk with earbuds in or headphones on as you need to be aware of your surroundings and those around you.
- Walk with somebody, especially after dark.
- Call Security for an escort if you don’t have a friend or classmate to walk with after dark.
- Have your keys in your hand before leaving the building, and after checking the backseat of your vehicle, get right in and lock the doors.
- When approaching your vehicle, look to see if there are people loitering around it. If so, return to the building or store and ask Security officers to walk you to your vehicle.
- Try to avoid leaving any valuables in your car or trunk. Before depositing packages in your trunk, check to see if anybody is watching, and if so, keep walking until you can place them in there unnoticed.
- If someone approaches you while you are in your locked vehicle and preparing to leave, just go ahead and leave and do not engage them in conversation as it can be a ploy to attempt to get into your car.
- If somebody is following you in your vehicle, call 911, describe the vehicle and where you are, and tell them where you are heading and ask them to meet you there. Do not drive to your residence if somebody is following you! The same applies if you are walking on foot.
- When leaving your apartment or house for the holidays, arrange to have the mail either picked up by a friend, or stopped by the Post Office. Leave different lights on with timers, and have neighbors put away your garbage cans and pick up newspapers. Have all packages sent to your George Fox PO box for safekeeping.
These are just a few tips. We have many other informative handouts in the Security office on subjects like preventing identity theft, apartment safety, package and car theft prevention, and more. Stop by and check them out!
Questions? Contact Nadine Kincaid (nkincaid@georgefox.edu).

George Fox is once again partnering with Hillsboro Airporter to provide shuttle service to Portland International Airport for Thanksgiving break. Students will be expected to work directly with Hillsboro Airporter to reserve their spot.
Here are the details:
- The cost for one passenger is $65, plus a tip. Each additional passenger is $3.
- Each shuttle can fit five to six passengers. The cost per student is based on the total number of passengers during the scheduled times, so if you can fill one shuttle, the cost per student could be as low as $15 (if you have a total of six passengers).
- Make your reservations more than 24 hours in advance and Hillsboro Airporter can group you together. To reserve your spot, go online to Hillsboro Airporter & Car Service LLC.
- Hillsboro Airporter accepts cash or credit card for payment. Parents can call Hillsboro Airporter with a credit card to pay for their student’s fare.
- Hillsboro Airporter has 24/7 service. It will work with students and their families, putting students together to lower the cost of the fare.
Questions? Contact the Office of Student Life (jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2316).

Join professor emeritus Roger Newell on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m., when he will be signing copies of his new book, “Keine Gewalt! No Violence!†at the Newberg Public Library. The event will include refreshments and an opportunity to chat with the author.
The book tells the backstory of the theological debates and personal acts of faith and courage leading to the moment when the church became the cradle for the German revolution. The book’s first chapter explores the ambivalence of renowned theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer to stand up to the Nazis. As Newell writes, “With remarkable political savvy, Hitler turned his full attention toward the Protestants, enticing and intimidating the children of Luther to join his revival of national honor and military-industrial strength.†Subsequent chapters discuss how other prominent theologians such as Karl Barth and Martin Niemöller responded to the Nazis, as well how the church dealt with the cold war. The themes that emerge from “Keine Gewalt! No violence!†remain relevant for our own era of seemingly endless conflict. One reviewer called the book “a fascinating look at how the power of prayer can transform individuals and governments.â€
