Love offering being taken for Friends church in Houston

Saturday, September 9th, 2017

The Office of Spiritual Life is taking a love offering for Friendswood Friends Church in Houston, Texas. Friendswood Friends is a member of the Evangelical Friends Church-Mid America Yearly Meeting. The town of Friendswood was significantly impacted by Hurricane Harvey, and the church is working to address the many needs in the community.

In chapel this past week, we collected money from students to send along, and we want to extend to staff and faculty the same opportunity to join our students in blessing the church in their relief efforts. Please bring your cash donation to the Office of Spiritual Life by Sept. 12. Because this is a love offering, these donations are not tax-deductible.

Use caution when exercising outside due to poor air quality

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017

Many of you may have noticed a layer of ash on your cars over the past couple days. This is related to the Oregon wildfires that are currently burning throughout the state. As a result, the air quality in this region is poor (especially for those with lung conditions such as asthma). It is recommended to avoid or exercise caution when exercising outside until conditions clear.

If you have questions or need to speak with a health care professional about concerns, please contact the university’s Health and Counseling Center at 503-554-2340.

ARC consultants available to visit your classroom

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017

Academic Resource Center appointments are officially available for the semester! For students to fully benefit from this resource, it is critical that they know the ARC exists and what it is.

If you are interested in an ARC consultant visiting your class and giving a brief talk about the ARC, please email Maddie Lowen at mlowen@georgefox.edu. These brief talks can be as short as five to 10 minutes, depending on your classes’ needs, and are a great way for students to put a face to the ARC and better understand the resources available to them.

  • Canyon Commons (south door entrance) and Klages Center (Student Union Building) have 24/7 card access for all students.
  • The Red Cross has several best practices for keeping safe and well during the heat.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing. Avoid dark clothing.
  • Slow down, stay in the shade and avoid extended time in the sun.
  • If you must be in the sun, keep water with you.
  • Find a cool place to stay during the heat of the day.
  • For more information on what to do when temperatures rise, you may download the Red Cross Mobile App.
  • Recognize the signs of heat exhaustion: leg cramps, flushed skin, dizziness, fainting, headache, excessive sweating without physical exertion
  • Do not hesitate to contact 911 if you are experiencing heat-related symptoms.

Today is day of employee photo shoot; swing by Crisman Crossing

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017

Attention Newberg campus employees: University photographer Sarah Small will be at the Crisman Crossing bridge for a scheduled photo shoot today (Wednesday) between 10 a.m. and noon.

If your employee photo on the university website is in need of updating, this is your chance to get it done! Not sure if you need a retake? If your existing photo is more than two years old, is poorly lit, is out of focus, and/or has a gray, brown or black background, it’s time for an update.

No appointment is necessary, and each photo subject will be done in only a minute or two. Solid, neutral clothing colors are recommended.

Questions? Feel free to contact Sarah at ssmall@georgefox.edu.
