Volunteers needed for nursing and social work’s poverty simulation event

Thursday, September 14th, 2017

The nursing and social work departments are looking for volunteers to participate in our poverty simulation on Wednesday, Oct. 11, and Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 12:45 to 3 p.m. in Canyon Commons. We would be thrilled if you would join us for one or both dates. If you would like to “job share,” we would be happy to accommodate this as well.

The poverty simulation is a required event for senior social work and nursing students and is dependent upon getting volunteers to help be part of “the community.” Essentially, you will be acting out the part of a business owner or agency member (such as a grocery store clerk, pawn shop owner, day care worker, unemployment officer, DMV employee, etc.). There is nothing you need to do to prepare. A packet will be given to you at the event (before students arrive) with all that you need to know about your part.

You will have the opportunity to watch the students as they assume the role of a family living in poverty and as they go through daily tasks with the added challenge of poverty. It is truly fascinating and eye-opening for all!

Please RSVP by Oct. 4 with which day(s) you would like to participate by calling the School of Nursing at 503-554-2950 or emailing nursing@georgefox.edu.

Thank you for your time!

University community invited to Bonnie Jerke’s remembrance event on Sept. 23

Wednesday, September 13th, 2017

Bonnie Jerke, longtime director of career services at George Fox, passed away over the summer after a lengthy battle with cancer. There will be a potluck lunch at 1 p.m., and those attending are asked to bring a dish to share with others. It will be a “come-and-go” event with a time of sharing after the lunch. Those organizing this event wanted to invite Bonnie’s colleagues and friends from the university community as well. They are asking that people RSVP on Bonnie’s Facebook page under the invite post from Linda Byrd.
