Call for stationery orders

Thursday, August 9th, 2018

Now is the time to order university stationery. The collective order helps keep costs low – the higher the volume, the lower the cost. Consequently, it is most economical to overestimate needs and store a small surplus.

I will be accepting orders through Wednesday, Aug. 22. For order instructions, go to the marketing communications website. Continue to purchase all non-departmental stationery (including “second-sheet letterhead”) through the university’s Office of Print Services.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you,
Danette Newkirk (dnewkirk@georgefox.edu)

Seven spots available in next week’s CPR/First Aid/AED class

Thursday, August 9th, 2018

Now is a great time to get trained in CPR/AED/First Aid! There are seven spots remaining in next week’s class, scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 13-14.

You can sign up online on the Campus Public Safety website. Our hope is that every department would have a minimum of one person trained in CPR/AED/First Aid. The classes are also open for community members, so spread the word and sign up today to secure your spot!

Encourage students to register their cars ASAP

Thursday, August 9th, 2018

Do you know of any sophomores, juniors, seniors and grad students who have yet to register for their residential and commuter permits? If so, please encourage them to register now so they receive them before school starts!

Commuters and grad students should input the address they are commuting from as the “mailing address.” Students registering for a residential permit should use their George Fox address and PO box for the “mailing address” so it will be waiting for them to sign for at Mail Services. They will not be in students’ PO boxes.

Students should print out their temporary permit from the link sent to them after successfully registering and place it on their dashboard until their permit has arrived.

Questions? Contact Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu or call 503-554-2090 during business hours.

Don’t forget next week’s all-community meeting in Canyon Commons

Updated Fitness Center Information

Sunday, August 5th, 2018

We trust you are excited about the new Hadlock Student Center (HSC)! Assuming everything continues on schedule, the fitness center portion of the facility will be open with limited hours (tentatively 4 to 9 p.m.) beginning Monday, Aug. 27 (anticipated grand opening and full hours will begin Monday, Sept. 3). This is subject to change if there are unexpected delays in construction.

If you use the fitness center in Wheeler, you’ll notice most of the space has been cleared in anticipation of remodeling it for athletics’ use since the HSC will be opening soon. Due to this upcoming remodeling of the Wheeler fitness center space, some equipment has been moved into the adjacent dance studio space (Wheeler 211) for general student and employee use until the HSC opens. The squat racks are also still available for use and are in their original spot.

There are more limited hours for this interim space in Wheeler, as it will now be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed Saturday and Sunday). We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience during this transitional period and trust that the new space in the HSC will make it worth the wait!

Questions? Contact Rob Simpson (simpsonr@georgefox.edu) regarding the HSC or Adam Puckett (apuckett@georgefox.edu) regarding the Wheeler Sports Center space.

Updated Vehicle Registration Information

Sunday, August 5th, 2018

We apologize for any frustration in accessing your vehicle registration information, as the database unfortunately is not granting you access to your previous registration information.

If you’ve had car changes since you first registered within the past three to four years when we switched to the new hangtags (or can’t remember which vehicles are registered), just email Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu with the changes and she can update it for you.

If you work at the Newberg campus and have yet to register any vehicles, you can access the vehicle registration link underneath “GFU Resources” on the home page of MyGFU. Have your DMV registration slip in front of you, as you will need to input information from that slip.

Every employee is given one gratis parking permit that can be switched between your vehicles. If you wish to purchase additional tags for each vehicle you drive to campus, they are only $5 cash each at the Campus Public Safety office.

Bruin Den is closed this week

Sunday, August 5th, 2018

The Bruin Den will be closed this week (Aug. 6-10) in preparation for the upcoming school year. We will reopen Monday, Aug. 13, with summer hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) until classes start on Monday, Aug. 27, when we start school year hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Encourage sophomores, juniors and seniors to register their vehicles

Sunday, August 5th, 2018

Know any sophomores, juniors and/or seniors? If so, please encourage them to register their vehicles for residential or commuter parking permits! Permits will take one to three weeks to arrive, so now is the time to register.

Contact Nadine Kincaid (nkincaid@georgefox.edu) with any questions.

Please review your vehicle info on MyGFU

Thursday, August 2nd, 2018

Before undergraduate students start to arrive in a mere seven days, now would be a great time to log on to MyGFU and check your vehicle registration.

  • If you have a new car that isn’t listed, please email Nadine Kincaid with all of the new vehicle’s pertinent information and which vehicle it replaces.
  • Can’t find your parking permit or need to purchase an additional one for another car? Bring $5 cash to the Campus Public Safety office and we will issue one on the spot.
  • Have yet to register anything? Please go on MyGFU and click on the vehicle registration link under “Staff Resources” and have your DMV registration slip handy to fill in the required information. Please put your campus PO box number in the “mailing address” line, as all permits will be sent via campus mail.
  • Don’t work at the Newberg campus but go there frequently for meetings? Please go ahead and register as well.
  • A gentle reminder: Your staff parking permit is for your use only and not for your child’s use. They must purchase their own parking permit and must park where their permit allows (not the staff lots).
  • If you work solely at the Portland Center and only come infrequently to the Newberg campus, just check in at the Campus Public Safety office for a temporary permit when in Newberg.

Questions? An out-of-the-box vehicle situation? Please contact Nadine at nkincaid@georgefox.edu.

Thanks!

University launches Bruin Community Pantry this fall

Thursday, August 2nd, 2018

The Office of Student Life is excited to announce the start of Bruin Community Pantry, an initiative seeking to address the real problem of hunger (“food insecurity”) on campus. It’s our goal to help meet the needs of community members who, for one reason or another, do not have access to enough healthy food.

Four different components of Bruin Community Pantry include:

Food Pantry
All George Fox community members have access to the pantry, located in the Roberts Center (Room 110). Community food drives will be held to provide non-perishable items for the pantry, and athletic teams will facilitate food drives during home games.

Contact student life for a list of items non-perishable food and household items needed for the pantry. Donations are now being accepted in the student life office on the third floor of the Stevens Center.

Hospitality
Partnerships with local businesses for “gifts in kind” have been established with Bon Appetit, Newberg’s Grocery Outlet and Ray’s Produce. A variety of pre-packaged foods are available for students, located at hospitality tables in the student life office, spiritual life office, and the Intercultural Resource Center (Moore House). The tables are open during office hours, which are generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Duke Athletic Center will host a peanut butter and jelly sandwich bar that is available to all George Fox students.

Leftovers
The student life office will arrange for quality leftover food to be stored in a refrigerator in our office. All food donated will be adequately contained and dated. Food not picked up in the appropriate amount of time will be disposed of.

Students participating in this program can sign up by contacting our office. A waiver is required for anyone participating in the Leftovers program.

Outreach
Partnering with existing local outreach initiatives facilitated by spiritual life, students who want to support their efforts will be connected to their programs.

We live in a society with easy access to processed food. When you eat whole foods, you’re getting food in its natural state. This aspect of our outreach will endeavor to provide cooking classes in various living areas on campus using recipes from “Eat well on $4 a day, Good and Cheap.”

For more information, please contact Jere Witherspoon in the student life office (jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2312).
