Do you have questions about faith? You are invited to participate in Alpha, a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith. We will provide food, a video to watch, and the opportunity for a conversation during the video that provides questions. It will also give you a chance to meet new people and find a safe space to talk about this topic.

The program will run for 10 weeks, so come and invite your friends. Everyone is welcome. We will meet in Stevens 208 at 5 p.m. every Wednesday, starting tonight. This will count as a chapel credit elective, too.

Tuesday, September 25th, 2018

The Office for Spiritual Life is looking for employees who would like to be a part of the Employee Prayer Network. If you would be willing to commit to pray for George Fox each week, please email the Prayer Network coordinator, Lecia Retter (lretter@georgefox.edu).

Questions about the Prayer Network can be directed to Lecia Retter or Jamie Noling-Auth (jnolingauth@georgefox.edu).

Please park ONLY where your permit allows

Tuesday, September 25th, 2018

There are several reserved parking spaces around campus that are indicated by signage. These spots are ONLY for staff working in those departments – not other staff or student employees. Loading zones are exactly that – just for unloading – and then they must be vacated.

This also applies to the three 10-minute spots in front of Mail Services. They are only for mail pick-ups, not for parking for a class. Other reserved spots are clearly marked around campus for area coordinators who live in various dorms and houses as well as plant services staff who need their reserved spots for their service vehicles.

There is no student parking on Carlton Way (in between the Edwards dorm and Mail Services), as that is staff-only parking. We’ve also seen students and staff parking in visitor rows in the Stevens and Roberts Center lots. These need to be kept clear for our numerous visitors to campus.

Ticket prices begin at $25 for parking in a reserved spot and go up for each succeeding infraction, so please save your money and park ONLY where your permit allows!

Contact Nadine Kincaid (nkincaid@georgefox.edu) with any questions.

All invited to Friday’s honors lecture featuring author Gabe Lyons

Monday, September 24th, 2018

The William Penn Honors Program invites the university community to a free lecture, “Faithfulness in the Age of Distraction,” at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 28, in Bauman Auditorium. Presenting will be Gabe Lyons, coauthor of Good Faith (2016), unChristian (2007) and the author of The Next Christians (2010), a manifesto for how Christians can faithfully lead in a changing culture.

Lyons’ presentation will address our scattered, frantic day-to-day lives: the too-tight schedules, the looming deadlines, the constant technological buzz – everything that has become a barrier to our relationship with God and others. You’ll come away with new tools and a refreshed perspective on what it takes to live out the gospel in our modern world.

Lyons is the founder of Q, a learning community of Christian leaders where they are equipped to engage our cultural moment.

Attend the Fall Staff Development Conference and sign up for ‘Worthy’ Book Club

Monday, September 24th, 2018

The Staff Development Committee will be hosting the Fall Conference from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1. See the 2018 Fall Staff Conference Worthy Information Flyer for details and mark your calendar to join us! A limited number of administrators and faculty will be able to participate in the conference presentation as space permits (information on this will follow as we draw closer to the conference date).

Support staff may also participate in a book club opportunity. In an effort to promote fun, learning and connection opportunities for staff, we are coordinating a voluntary book club to read and discuss Worthy, a book written by our very own Melanie Springer Mock. Polly Peterson will be presenting from this book at the upcoming Fall Conference.

If you’d like to participate, simply complete this Worthy Book Club Google Sign-Up Sheet to let us know your preferences for location and time. We plan to run two sessions: one before and another after the Fall Conference (which will have a separate sign-up as the date draws nearer).

There are a few ways you can participate:

  • You may just go to the conference and enjoy the information from the author (required)
  • You may purchase the book and read it on your own (voluntary)
  • You may choose to participate in a book club (voluntary). Here is how:
  1. Sign up for the Worthy Book Club by the end of the day on Thursday, Sept. 27
  2. Purchase the book (Kathy Harris on Minthorn’s second floor will have them available for $12, or you may purchase it online)
  3. Read one to two chapters (about 40 pages) a week
  4. Enjoy meeting on non-work time (you may flex your schedule, and we will have before lunch/after work options) to discuss the book and get to know your colleagues better

If you have questions, please contact Jennifer Hanks (jhanks@georgefox.edu) or Darby Thiessen (dthiessen@georgefox.edu).
