Be aware of email phishing attempts

Wednesday, December 19th, 2018

There have been a few phishing attempts that have been circulating through George Fox emails. These attempts can come in various forms, and they are sent to try to gain access to either your email account or to confidential information. So that you don’t fall victim to these attempts, please review the guidelines below.

If you feel you’ve received a suspicious email, check the following:

  • The sender’s address. If it is unrecognizable or something similar to, but not exactly, the sender’s normal email address, it could be an attempt. Please note that a similar email address does not mean the original email address has been compromised; this is called a spoofing account.

Examples of email addresses used in recent phishing attempts: “rbaker@my.com” and “mshelton.georgefox.edu@gmail.com.”

  • Any link or odd instructions. If the email directs you to click on a link (even something familiar such as iTunes, etc.) or input sensitive information, it could be an attempt to get your password or other important information. Verify with the sender personally if you are suspicious.

If you feel that you have received some sort of phishing attempt:

  1. Email the Service Desk at servicedesk@georgefox.edu.
  2. Mark the email as “spam” in your Gmail inbox, which will then make Google aware of the issue.
  3. Request that anyone who has been emailed via the attempt also mark it as “spam” in their inbox.
  4. If you did not click on any links or reply, you do not need to do anything further.
  5. If you did click on a link or send a reply with sensitive information, you’ll want to change your password as soon as you can in MyGFU (this will automatically update your email password). Then go through the Settings in your Gmail account to look for anything amiss, such as an unfamiliar forwarding address or vacation-responder that you never created.

Feel free to call the Service Desk at 503-545-2569 and press “2” if you would like help walking through these steps.

Consider volunteering as a Life Group leader this spring

Tuesday, December 18th, 2018

The Office for Spiritual Life is looking for post-college Life Group leaders for our six-week spring Life Groups (the weeks of Feb. 11 through March 22). Life Groups are small groups of undergraduate students who meet together for prayer, Bible study and fellowship.

Groups meet weekly for 60 to 90 minutes at the time and location of your choosing. Participants will select the group they wish to participate in based on the details that leaders provide.

We welcome our employees, alumni, family members of George Fox employees and students, and members of our wonderful local churches to consider leading a group. Our spring leader meeting will take place on Thursday, Jan. 31, from noon to 1:30 p.m., and lunch will be provided.

For more information and to sign up, visit this webpage or contact the Office for Spiritual Life at spirituallife@georgefox.edu.

Important end-of-semester reminders from library digital learning and IT

Monday, December 17th, 2018

As the semester closes, library digital learning and IT would like to share a few reminders with faculty:

  • Faculty will want to keep an archive of the gradebooks for all courses taught for the past five years. If you use the FoxTALE gradebook in your 2018 Fall course sites, you can export each gradebook into a spreadsheet that can be saved outside of FoxTALE. The guide, Downloading the Gradebook, includes a video demonstration on the process.
  • You will want to use your new 2019 Spring course sites to teach your spring-term courses since students are automatically enrolling in these sites. If you would like to import content from another course site, the guide, Importing Course Content, includes a video demonstration and step-by-step instructions.
  • 2019 Spring sites are currently hidden from students. When you are ready, you can give students access to your courses. The guide, Making the Course Visible, demonstrates how to make a course available.
  • You may need to adjust the course start and end dates in each of your course sites. This will assure that your courses are listed correctly in the Dashboard (e.g., courses move from “Future” tab to “In Progress” tab on Jan. 14). The guide, Adjusting Course Start and End Dates, demonstrates how to make this adjustment.
  • Note: Adjusting the course start date does not make the course accessible to students. Only the setting “Course Visibility” enables students to enter the course.

As we move into the season of inclement weather, you are invited to join us for a web conference for ideas on how to conduct a class using a Zoom web conference. We are offering two opportunities for this session. You can receive one clock hour of professional development for participation in this web conference.

You can register for one of these sessions using the form Faculty Sign-up for Development Events.

• Tuesday, Dec. 18, noon to 1 p.m.
• Tuesday, Dec. 18, 4 to 5 p.m.

We hope you find this information helpful. If you would like more information, we encourage you to contact digitallearning@georgefox.edu or servicedesk@georgefox.edu
