Now that the dust has settled from the spring semester, it is a great time to update your vehicle registrations!

Please make note of this car registration information …

• If you are still using an all-white staff permit, or an orange adjunct permit, it has been void for four years.
• If you have yet to initially register your vehicle, please do so at your earliest convenience on MyGFU. Be sure to have your DMV vehicle registration slip in front of you, as the database will ask for some information that is on there.
• If you are currently registered but have a change, addition or deletion of a vehicle, please bring the DMV registration slip to the Campus Public Safety office or email Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu if you aren’t in Newberg so we can update your vehicle information.
• Tired of switching your gratis permit from car to car? It’s only $5 cash to purchase a permit for your second car! Bring your money to the CPS office and we can issue you a new permit dedicated to your second vehicle.
• Did you purchase a new car but don’t have the new plates yet? No problem! We can register it using the temporary permit on the back window, then update it later when you email your new plate numbers to Nadine.
• If you work at the Portland Center but make frequent visits to the Newberg campus, we need you to register your vehicle as well and to park in the staff lots.
• Please don’t wait until school starts to do these updates, as the line often stretches out the Campus Public Safety office door!

The university community is invited to a biology candidate research lecture presented by Dr. Elizabeth DuPriest from 11 a.m. to noon today (Tuesday) in Hoover 102.

Fetal and early childhood environmental influences can “program” a baby’s health and risk of disease that they experience later in life. Using nutritional and transgenic models, Dr. DuPriest will explain how maternal influences shape early growth and the structure and function of the offspring’s kidneys, liver, and adipose tissue.

The title of Dr. DuPriest’s lecture is “Developmental Origins of Health and Disease: Thank Your Mother for Your Good Health!”

Do you have experience with bunions? Then we need you!

George Fox University’s School of Physical Therapy is conducting research on bunions. Our research team is interested in looking at two groups of people: 1) persons who had surgery for their bunions, and 2) those who currently have bunions. 

We would like to know how the foot functions following bunion surgery. In order to answer this question, we are collecting data on how people walk and on muscle strength.

Testing is conducted in the physical therapy department. The tests are simple to perform and require about an hour to complete. The results of our study will help to provide direction as to the best form of rehabilitation after surgery or in lieu of surgery.

The Office of International Student Development is hosting a garage sale tomorrow (Saturday), with proceeds to benefit the university’s International Student Emergency Fund.

We have a wide variety of items for sale, including furniture, household wares, decorations, jewelry, shoes, books … too much to list! Please come by to support our international students or just to say “hi.” The sale will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Intercultural Resource Center at 1110 E. Sheridan St.

Please note that the Hadlock Student Center and Rental Center will not be open on Saturday and Sunday through the summer months. If you’re looking to rent equipment for the weekend, it needs to be picked up Friday between 4 and 7 p.m. and returned on Monday by noon.

• Monday-Friday: 6 to 9 a.m.; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 4 to 7 p.m.

Plant Services is hosting its annual Phase II event this week. Feel free to swing by the Macy basement between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. today (Thursday), or between 8 a.m. and noon on Friday, May 10.

After students and staff view the items, whatever remains will be donated to the International Student Emergency Fund and other local charities.

At the end of every school year, many students have good reusable items that they do not want to take home over the summer. These items often include blankets, clothing, kitchen supplies, small appliances, radios, room decorations, furniture, etc. 

In an effort to keep the dumpsters from overflowing and to be better stewards of our resources, Phase II was initiated. Many students have benefited from these items. For example, summer work-study students often find items they need for apartment living.

All are welcome to visit a free art exhibition featuring local artist Bonnie Hull. The exhibit “Little Me” opens on Monday, May 13, and remains up through Friday, July 19, in Minthorne Gallery

The exhibition features the paintings of Hull, a resident of Salem, Oregon, who is a self-proclaimed painter, preservationist, gardener and quilter. Her work has appeared at George Fox previously: In 2015, she and fellow Salem artist Kay Worthington showcased their quilts in the university’s gallery.

The gallery will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Jennifer Salzman, director of exhibitions and collection, at 503-554-2634.

The Campus Public Safety office would like to offer these safety tips as we approach summer …

• Don’t prop open doors! Purchase a fan now before they are gone for the summer, and use it for air circulation in your room or apartment.
• If you want to sleep with open windows, buy some wooden dowels and cut them three to four inches shorter than the width of your window track. That way, it locks the window so that nobody can enter from the outside, but you still get cooler evening air coming in.
• Walk in pairs at night, or call Campus Public Safety for an escort back to your residence.
• Stay hydrated! Your water bottle should be your constant companion.
• Use sunscreen and wear a hat.
• If you are working outdoors and begin to feel faint from the heat, get out of the heat and into a cooler location and sit down, rest and hydrate. Learn the signs of heat stroke.
• Do any outdoor work earlier in the morning when the temperatures are cooler.
• Use a windshield screen in your car to help reduce the internal temperature, and never leave a child or pet in a car! Temperatures can climb rapidly in a closed car in the summer, and it can be deadly.
• If you see somebody who doesn’t belong on campus, contact Campus Public Safety immediately with a good physical description of the person and location so we can check them out.
• Stay safe and have a great summer!

The library has three faculty study rooms available for those needing a quiet area for study and research for the summer.
