The nursing program’s service trip to Africa is hosting a can and coin drive from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3, so if you’re having a Super Bowl viewing party, save your empty cans!

You can help by collecting any empty soda cans and/or loose change to donate to our group and leaving them in the lobby of your dorm with a note, “For the nursing serve trip,” or in a bag on your porch. We will come by to pick them up, so that is all you need to do!

This service trip will be to Kenya to provide medical care to people in the Lugulu Mission Hospital and surrounding rural communities. Any and all donations are appreciated.

The university community is invited to a special guest lecture, “The Gardeners’ Dirty Hands: Environmental Politics & Christian Ethics,” tomorrow (Thursday) at 7 p.m. in Canyon Commons.

Presenting will be Noah Toly, professor of urban studies and politics & international relations at Wheaton College, where he directs the Center for Urban Engagement. In his lecture, Toly will offer an interpretation of environmental governance that draws upon insights into the tragic – the need to forego, give up, undermine, or destroy one or more goods in order to possess or secure one or more other goods.

Toly will engage Christian and classical Greek ideas of the tragic to illuminate the enduring challenges of environmental politics. He’ll suggest that Christians have unique resources for responsible engagement with global environmental politics while acknowledging the need for mutually agreed, and ultimately normative, restraints.

• Talk about the ARC during your classes before major papers are due.
• Recommend academic coaching as a way to get support with accountability, time management, study skills, and more.

The Chinese lunar new year celebration is one of George Fox’s biggest cultural events on campus! We share authentic Chinese food such as Kung Pao beef, black pepper beef, and sweet and sour chicken from the popular restaurant Taste of Sichuan and Bon Appetit. The Office for Spiritual Life is looking for post-college Life Group leaders for our six-week spring Life Groups (the weeks of Feb. 10 through March 20). Life Groups are small groups of undergraduate students who meet together for prayer, Bible study and fellowship.

Life Groups meet weekly for 60 to 90 minutes at the time and location of your choosing. We can assist you with finding a great location if you would like. Participants will select the group they wish to participate in based on the details that leaders provide.

Groups are encouraged to use one of three curriculum options recommended by the Office for Spiritual Life which parallel other themes that are being explored in chapel.

We welcome our employees, alumni, George Fox family members, and participants of our wonderful local churches to consider leading a group. Our fall leader meeting will take place on Thursday, Feb. 6, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at a location to be determined. Lunch will be provided.

Join us for a research seminar, “Gamification of STEM Courses in Higher Education,” presented by a math faculty candidate, today (Tuesday) from 3 to 4 p.m. in EHS 125.

While the word “gamification” may sound like it means playing games in class, it means something entirely different: the infusion of game principles into an otherwise non-game situation.

Gamification is the addition of game elements, mechanics, and principles to non-game contexts – the classroom, for example. Gamified settings are becoming more and more popular in non-classroom contexts, and this research specifically looks at what it might take to gamify an undergraduate STEM course, including advantages, disadvantages and challenges.

Join us for an exciting talk by the founders of InStove, Fred Colgan and Damon Ogle, who have dedicated their lives to improving indoor air quality and minimizing burn accidents in refugee camps, hospitals, schools, and orphanages in low-resource countries. They will be speaking in the Klages Maker Hub from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Their talk will include how they started InStove, experiences, lessons learned, and progress over the years, and what they hope to see in the future for institutional cook stove programs.

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, we’re hosting reps from 20 camps in the local area and beyond to share paid opportunities with students for the upcoming summer. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the EHS Atrium.

Working at a camp is a great way to get work experience while doing something meaningful that impacts others. Camps hire students of all school years, in all majors. Drop by anytime during the fair to learn about the different positions available.

Night to Shine, a prom for teens and adults with special needs, is almost here! The event is happening at Northwest Christian Church from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, and we need volunteers to make it happen.

Every guest of Night to Shine enters this event on a red carpet complete with a warm welcome from a friendly crowd and paparazzi. Once inside, guests receive the royal treatment, including hair and makeup stations, limousine rides, crowns and tiaras, a karaoke room, a catered dinner and dancing.

The George Fox theatre department opens its winter production The Shakers of Mount Lebanon Will Hold a Peace Conference This Month next week. Come join us for this Big Bridge Theatre Consortium play that tells the story of a Shaker community in crisis in the early 20th century.

The show runs in Wood-Mar Auditorium Jan. 30 through Feb. 1 and Feb. 6-8 at 7:30 p.m., and will also include 2 p.m. matinee performances on Sunday, Feb. 2, and Sunday, Feb. 9. Open captioning will be available for select shows.

Students get their own tickets free on both Thursdays, Jan. 30 and Feb. 6. Each student must purchase his or her own ticket using their George Fox email address, and they must bring their ID with them to the door.

Employees are provided with one complimentary ticket for any of the shows. Like students, employees need to order tickets using their George Fox email address and bring their ID to the door.

Reserve your seat online or pick them up at the box office in the Bruin Store (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). See you at the show!

All are invited to attend the Martin Luther King Jr. Day event at the Chehalem Cultural Center tonight (Monday). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the program begins at 6 p.m.

Leroy Barber will be the keynote speaker, and the Christopher Brown Jazz Quartet and Newberg Ballet Folklorico will perform. Following the program, breakout sessions on issues of race, poverty and justice will be led by Oregon Humanities Conversation Project facilitators, and a breakout session for high school students will be led by Guadalupe Garcia McCall, a George Fox assistant professor of English.
