Wellness Wednesday: The Benefits of Walking

Tuesday, September 1st, 2020

Good morning and happy Wednesday!

Today’s edition of Wellness Wednesdays is about the benefits of walking. Just 30 minutes a day significantly improves your overall health and helps you cope with daily challenges. This could be a time just to yourself to clear your mind, to meditate and pray, or just take a much-needed break. It’s worth it!

To find out about the multiple benefits of walking for half an hour a day, please read this list.

Get the word out about new alumni business directory

Tuesday, September 1st, 2020

This fall, the Office of Alumni Relations is creating an alumni-owned business directory to promote and support Bruin businesses in the area (West Coast).

The directory will be listed on the alumni website, included in all communications, and highlighted on social media. The purpose is to keep alumni-owned businesses in front of the broader alumni community so together we can support each other through this COVID-19 pandemic.

Please refer alumni-owned businesses by filling out this form, or share this link with business owners. Please share this opportunity with as many alumni as you can. Together we Stand Tall!

Thanks!

Contact Sara Reamy with any questions you may have (sreamy@georgefox.edu or ext. 2118).

Submit Fox360 alerts for students of concern

Tuesday, September 1st, 2020

If you have concerns about a student in the traditional undergraduate program, log into Fox360 at Fox360.georgefox.edu to submit an “alert” for the student. Submit alerts for concerns in the following areas:

  • Academic – Missing multiple classes; consistently poor academic performance
  • Behavioral – Concerning or disruptive behaviors in or outside of class
  • Emotional – Mental health concerns; unusual emotional expression
  • Physical – Medical concerns; extreme changes in grooming, personal care
  • Social – Personal, social, or family concerns that are affecting well-being and performance

This Fox360 Quick Guide provides a visual overview of the Fox360 system; more details about using Fox360 are available in this Google Doc.

The Student Support Network will assign a case manager to follow up with students. Case managers will do their best to give updates to faculty members who submit alerts or provide feedback. You are welcome to contact Jere Witherspoon (jwithers@georgefox.edu) or Rick Muthiah (rmuthiah@georgefox.edu) to inquire about the status of a student.

If you have questions or would like more information regarding Fox360, contact Rick at 503-554-2314 or rmuthiah@georgefox.edu.

Expense coding required for purchases related to COVID-19

Monday, August 31st, 2020

For any purchase made that relates to the COVID-19 pandemic, please include “COVID-19” in the “chartfield one” field in the coding string. This field can be entered for purchase requisitions, check requests, petty cash vouchers, or selected in Concur. Expenses would include personal protection equipment like masks, signage for keeping distance, cleaning equipment, computer software, etc.

Unfortunately, only one “chartfield one” can be used per transaction, and the COVID-19 code must take priority over another department designation.

If you have any questions about using this code with purchase requisitions, please contact Matt Hammar at ext. 2006 or mhammar@georgefox.edu. For any other questions about this coding, contact Cris Banton at ext. 2167 or cbanton@georgefox.edu.

We would like to invite you to drop by the student life office (entrance located on the side of Hadlock) today (Tuesday) between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to say farewell.

COVID-19 care, concerns and reporting

Sunday, August 30th, 2020

As we all work and live together, it is especially crucial that everyone understands the processes for reporting concerns and cases related to COVID-19.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to familiarize yourself with these processes:

Questions? Email COT@georgefox.edu.

Please avoid dumping garbage in recycling bins

Sunday, August 30th, 2020

The sunny yellow lids on the bins in the outside enclosures are for recycling only. Please avoid dumping garbage in the recycling bins because it contaminates the entire bin. If trash has been mixed into the recycling, the entire bin must be taken to the landfill.

The recycling bins are a commingled service, so recyclables can be mixed together. View the full list of what can be recycled

Recycling not only reduces the use of raw resources, it also reduces what is taken to landfills and saves the university money in garbage fees. Thank you for making a positive impact on our world!

New Adirondack chairs placed on the quad

Sunday, August 30th, 2020

To allow for more outdoor seating, new Adirondack chairs have been placed on the quad. Please leave the chairs where you found them, and do not move them.

Final call for stationery orders

Sunday, August 30th, 2020

This is the final call to order university stationery for the large fall order. The collective order helps keep costs low – the higher the volume, the lower the cost. Consequently, it is most economical to overestimate needs and store a small surplus.

Orders can be placed on the Marketing Communications website and will be accepted through Friday, Sep. 4.

Continue to purchase all non-departmental stationery (including “second-sheet letterhead”) through the university’s Office of Mail Services.

Questions? Email Jamison Loop at jloop@georgefox.edu.

Change to credit card policy

Sunday, August 30th, 2020

Effective Sep. 1, purchase orders will not be required for credit card purchases. All other spending guidelines remain in effect and will be closely monitored for compliance. Thank you all for your continued efforts to carefully evaluate all spending.

Purchasing and Finance are currently working on updated credit card policies and procedures that will result in fewer cards issued and cards identified for more specific uses. Once implemented, these changes are expected to continue to simplify the purchasing process.

Questions? Email Matt Hammar (Purchasing) at mhammar@georgefox.edu or Cris Banton (Finance) at cbanton@georgefox.edu.

Be sure to send John Heitz a note of thanks

Thursday, August 27th, 2020

After 24 years of service at George Fox, John Heitz is retiring at the end of August. John has served the university in plant services’ building repair department, and more recently as planner/estimator for plant services projects.

Students will remember him best by his startling demonstration on why undamaged window screens are important. Some staff may remember him best by his willingness to chase out unwanted animal residents. Serving 24 years means that there are so many great stories!

In lieu of a campus event, we would like to bless John with cards and letters. If you could take a moment to write him a note (or recall a favorite memory), please send those to Box 6449. Thank you!
