The editors are open to a wide range of styles and subject matter, but we are particularly looking for work that pushes boundaries and surprises us with its artistic approach and perspective of the world.

All are welcome to submit, including both students and employees and those who aren’t members of the George Fox community!

Submission Guidelines:

• Poetry and prose manuscripts must be submitted as a word document, in Times New Roman, 12-point font. Please title your pieces and remove your name from the document.
• Limit all prose to 1,000 words and send no more than five poems per submission.
• For artwork: Files should be named as the title of your piece followed by your name. Please remove all watermarks from your work.

All work should be submitted through our website.

Submissions close Friday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m.

The Hadlock Student Center has added a self-defense class to its group fitness program! Classes run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m.

In this martial arts-based class, you’ll learn to defend yourself like a pro with our student instructor, Mason Bertrand. You will gain confidence knowing that you can protect you and your loved ones with the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces.

During the course, you’ll learn realistic tactics and techniques to take down an attacker, regardless of their size, strength, and fighting strategy. As an added bonus, you’ll also develop superior physical fitness while having a blast!

The 2020 George Fox Political Civility Project continues, looking for ways to counteract increasing polarization and alienation in American politics. 

This Monday, Oct. 19, professors Mark Hall and Phil Smith will debate about whom we should vote for in the U.S. presidential election. Attendees will be invited to use the prototype Political Civility inventory to assess levels of civility in the debate. They will also hear a brief report on how the vice-presidential debate, and perhaps others, fared in terms of civility.

Attendees will also be given a chance to comment on what next steps our university should take to promote peacemaking in politics. 

The event is open to the public via Zoom (link available later this week). Students are invited to attend the event live in Bauman Auditorium.

In compliance with social distancing regulations, when the room reaches its 100-person COVID capacity, any others who arrive will be directed to join those attending (including any off-campus guests) via Zoom.

A group of undergraduate students is looking for willing participants to fill out a short survey for the Introduction to Marketing course.

The survey will be examining the target market’s interest in a potential product. This project is looking to bring back the 1984 Converse Startech Basketball shoes with modern age technology for everyday wear.

Whether or not you have heard of the shoe, it would be very helpful if you could fill out our very short survey. If you would like to go above and beyond, it would be greatly appreciated if you shared this survey with your colleagues and friends as well.

The Newberg and Portland campuses will be closed tomorrow (Friday) for the mid-semester holiday. All offices, libraries and bookstores will be closed.

Although the Murdock Library will be closed, the 24-hour space will remain open.

Save the dates for flu shot clinics on the Newberg campus next week. Both will be in Hoover 103:

• Wednesday, Oct. 14, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
• Thursday, Oct. 15, 12:30 to 3 p.m.

The flu shots are offered to employees and students. There will be no appointments; the shots will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis, but we ask that we do not congregate in large groups.

Regence and Kaiser health insurance are accepted. For other health insurance insurance, see this list of all the insurance groups they accept without prepayment. Family members can participate, but please note that they vaccinate children over 9 years of age with parental consent. All Kaiser members have to be 18 and over.

For those without an accepted insurance, the cost is $30. They accept cash or check. No debit or credit cards.

We expect that they will be able to administer about 25 to 30 vaccinations per hour, so please come prepared:

• Prefill and bring the insurance form attached (they need to be completely filled out including home address, date of birth, insurance ID# and signature.) Kaiser Vaccination form; General Insurance Vaccination form
• Bring your insurance card
• Wear loose or flexible cuffs to expedite the vaccination process
• Wear a mask and keep at least 6 feet distance from each other

Below are some important items to remember before you get a flu shot:

Q: Does the flu shot protect against COVID-19?
A: No. The flu shot doesn’t protect against COVID-19. However, the flu vaccine can help reduce your risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and death. If fewer people get the flu, care teams can focus their time and resources on providing COVID-19 patients with the care they need.

Q: Should a flu vaccine be given to someone with suspected of confirmed COVID-19?
A: No. If you tested positive for COVID-19, or believe you might have it, it’s best to wait before getting a flu shot. This will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 to anyone in the flu shot location, including other patients and healthcare teams.

The Intercultural Resource Center is hosting the annual Voices Conference at George Fox (fully online) starting tomorrow (Friday) at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m. SpIL credit will be offered!

This multicultural leadership conference is open for people from all backgrounds and cultures. Our vision is to create space for students, faculty, staff, and community members to engage in meaningful conversations about being multicultural leaders in an increasingly diverse society.

This year, well-known leaders and speakers Leroy and Donna Barber, Robert Chao Romero, Sunia Gibbs, and Kathy Khang will be leading virtual workshops and discussions regarding social justice, leadership and diversity.

This summer, Kathy Heininge took early retirement after serving 16 years as a professor; she subsequently received faculty emeritus status.
