Updated policy on face coverings (including face shields)

Thursday, January 21st, 2021

George Fox has updated its face-covering policy to meet new state guidelines.

Students, faculty, staff, vendors and visitors must use face coverings when in the following locations:

  • Enclosed public and common areas
  • Outdoor areas where physical distancing is not easily maintained

“Face covering” means a cloth, polypropylene, paper or other face covering that covers the nose and the mouth and that rests snugly above the nose, below the mouth, and on the sides of the face. Appropriate face coverings include two-layered face masks or gaiters.

The following are not approved face coverings because they allow droplets to be released:

  • Masks with valves or vents for exhalation
  • Lace masks or other coverings with openings, holes, visible gaps in the design or material
  • Masks with valves or vents for exhalation

“Face shield” means a clear plastic shield that covers the forehead, extends below the chin, and wraps around the sides of the face. Mini face shields that only cover the mouth are not permitted.

Face shields may be used:

  • When presenting in front of a class or audience so long as you maintain six feet of distance at all times.  If you are closer or likely to be closer than six feet, you must wear a face mask.
  • For employees who have work spaces that are cubicles or in common areas without a door, provided they maintain at least six feet of distance from others (they must put on a face mask when working with another individual in their workspace or if they leave their workspace).
  • If you have a medical condition preventing masks
  • If you are working with the hearing impaired so they can lip read

Employees and students should switch back to face masks when not in the above four circumstances.

Thomas Center equipment yard is closed to foot traffic

Thursday, January 21st, 2021

To create the safest environment possible for our employees and local pedestrians, we are closing the equipment yard at the Thomas Center to pedestrian foot traffic.

This also applies to the Thomas Lane service road that connects to Fulton Street. Thomas Lane will be closed to foot traffic past the batting cages.

If you wish to walk to the Thomas Center, please use the walking path that extends between Fulton Street and the Thomas Center (by the Morse practice field), or use the Villa Road sidewalk.

Monday, January 18th, 2021

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) and Disability and Accessibility Services (formerly DSO) have come together under one roof! The entire Learning Support Services (LSS) team is now located on the first floor of the Murdock Library. If you’ve been to the ARC, you know where we are.

To celebrate, we’re hosting a prize drawing for all employees as part of our rolling open house. The LSS open house will be held Tuesday, Jan. 19 – Friday, Jan. 29. Stop by to enter to win a thermal mug, get acquainted with the space and say hi! We look forward to seeing you.

We are also pleased to announce that the “Disability Services Office” name has been changed to Disability and Accessibility Services (DAS). We hope this new name will more accurately reflect the work we do both to serve students with disabilities and to increase accessibility across campus, including:

  • Physical building accessibility
  • Universal design for learning in courses
  • Education and advocacy across campus
  • Opportunities for students to connect around diagnoses, conditions, or symptoms that impact their lives

You can contact Disability and Accessibility Services at das@georgefox.edu or visit georgefox.edu/das for information. Our old email and web addresses still work. Note that our syllabus statement linked to from the Resources for Faculty web page includes the updated name and contact information.

Please contact any of the Learning Support Services team if we can be of service to you or your students:

Info on how to register a formal complaint

Monday, January 18th, 2021

While most student concerns and complaints can and should be resolved informally, there is a formal general complaint procedure described in the “Support for Students” section of the Undergraduate Student Handbook as well as on this website.

Note that these procedures cover complaints of a general nature and do not supersede specific policies involving special cases such as grade appeals, sexual harassment, etc., which are covered elsewhere in the Student Handbook, catalog or Graduate/DPS Policies.

For more information, contact the student life office (studentlife@georgefox.edu).

Safety and service reminders from Campus Public Safety

Sunday, January 17th, 2021

Campus Public Safety would like to remind the George Fox community of a few helpful safety tips. Because, while the Newberg campus is located in what is considered a generally safe location, we know that, unfortunately, crimes and emergencies can occur in any location and at any time of day.

We encourage everyone to program Campus Public Safety’s phone number into your cell phone right now so that it is available in case you need it. We are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week: 503-554-2090.

The following are some of the reasons why you may want to give us a call:

  • If you feel unsafe, please call our office so that we can escort you to your destination. Safety escorts are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
  • In case of an emergency, first, call 911, and then call CPS; we can coordinate with emergency first responders to help direct them to your location.
  • Roadside assistance: We are happy to assist in unlocking your car or giving you a jump start if your battery is dead.
  • Locked out of your room? Campus policy requires that you first try calling a RA from your living area if you are locked out of your room. If you are unable to reach an RA, then you are welcome to call CPS and we will make our best effort to respond as soon as we are available.
  • Reporting crimes and accidents: If you need to report a crime or accident, we can connect you to the proper George Fox department or off-campus agency to complete and file a report.

A victim of a crime is never at fault and should not be blamed for his or her actions. For those who would like to know what precautions they can take in order to reduce the risk of victimization, we offer the following tips:

  • Let someone know where you are going, your expected travel time, and how long you plan on being in that location.
  • If you are running or walking in the evening, wear bright or reflective clothing to make yourself more visible to drivers and to help someone spot you faster in case of an emergency.
  • Also, if you are running or walking in the evening, go with someone or a group of people you trust. (If you choose this option, be sure to wear the appropriate face coverings.) Stay in well-lit, highly visible areas. Stay in familiar areas and avoid shortcuts.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and walk with purpose. Distractions like using your cell phone while walking can make you particularly vulnerable.
  • In regards to electronics, be sure that your phone is charged before traveling. Wear only one earbud while you walk and keep your volume low.
  • Do not leave valuable items in your car in an open view. Park in well-lit areas where it will be safe for you to return to at night. Take note of where you park so that you can easily locate your car again.

Questions? Call Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090 or email Elrike Shaw at eshaw@georgefox.edu. Campus Public Safety officers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year!
