What emotions do you struggle with? Is it paralyzing fear, red-hot anger, or deep sadness? Our emotions offer so much vitality for life, but when we are not in right relationship with them, they can cut us off from ourselves, others and God.
On Friday, Feb. 18, join Michael Simmons for an online course, “Companioning Our Shadow: Emotions & Relationships.†Simmons will explore practices and tools for companioning our shadow, particularly surrounding our emotions and how they impact our relationships. This course is a space to invite Christ to meet our hidden parts and deepen the healing process.
The course will be offered via Zoom from 9 to 11 a.m. The cost is $39, and the Zoom link will be provided. You can register here if interested.
Simmons, a doctoral student at Portland Seminary and an ordained elder in the Free Methodist Church, is a spiritual director and retreat facilitator, and he serves on the leadership team with Companioning Center and the board of Deep Water, a local community that provides tools, processes and sacred space for women and men to heal.
Questions? Contact Simmons at msimmons@georgefox.edu.

Greetings! Now that the book rush is over, unsold textbooks and other course materials will be returned to vendors.
If you have a late-start class, or have titles that will not be used until later in the semester, please let the bookstore know so we don’t send them back. As in fall, we can create a “late use” section in the store so your students can find their books as we gear up to reset for summer.
Email us at 1478mgr@follett.com, or call 503-554-2543.

Doctor of physical therapy students are conducting a research study and are in need of volunteers who are older adults. The study concerns developing a fall prevention program through balance exercises that mitigate the risk of falling.
To participate in our study, you must:
- Be age 60 or older
- Live independently or in an assisted living facility
- Be able to walk at least one block without the help of another person
- Stand unsupported without an assistive device
- Pass a mental status examination
To participate, you must not have a diagnosis of a neurological condition or a current illness or health issues that would make performing physical activities unsafe. Also, you may not be taking medications which cause excessive sleepiness.
Participants will come to the university’s Medical Sciences Building, where we would ask you to sign an informed consent form, answer questions, and perform a short mental status examination and a timed up-and-go test. Depending on your responses to the questionnaires and timed up-and-go performance, you may or may not be eligible for the study.
Those who are eligible will perform a physical performance test in a lab setting, consisting of the following activities: blood pressure and heart rate, walking test, balance tests, and a fear of falling questionnaire.
You are able to stop participation in the study at any time and for any reason. No information that would identify you will be made public, and we do not feel there is more than minimal risk associated with this study.
If you or anyone you know is interested in participating, we invite you to schedule an appointment for testing. Please call 503-554-2463 or email the study team at GFUDPT.Research@gmail.com.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is hosting Scholarship Summit on campus today (Friday). With 600-plus visitors expected on campus, we are asking George Fox students and employees to help extend the Be Known promise throughout the day.
Here’s what you can keep in mind:
- Use street parking instead of campus parking lots. Guests will be arriving on campus Friday morning between 8 and 8:30 a.m. and will fill all the main campus parking lots.
- Be mindful of guests in your living area. There will be housing tours circulating through Edwards, Gulley, Pennington, and HMS from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tour groups will be viewing dorm lobbies and a room on the first floor of each dorm.
- Plan for a busier than usual Canyon Commons. Guests will use the main server line and will be encouraged to dine in CCD 101-103. If you see a family looking for a spot to sit, invite them to join you!
If you have any questions, email visit@georgefox.edu or call Lauren Hill at 503-554-2245.
