The university community is invited to attend an open house to honor professor Brent Weaver tomorrow (Tuesday) from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Alumni Plaza. In case of bad weather, the Bauman lobby/porch will be used.

Two days later, on Thursday, April 29, join us for an open house to honor professor Kenn Willson from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Alumni Plaza (or in the Bauman lobby/porch if the weather is poor).

We will present Kenn with an emeritus honor at 3:45 p.m. Please bring a card or letter with your well wishes for him.

As we approach the end of the academic year, campus public safety would like to remind the George Fox community of a few helpful safety tips. While the Newberg campus is located in a generally safe location, unfortunately, crimes and emergencies can occur in any location and at any time of day.

We encourage you to program campus public safety’s phone number into your cell phone so that it is available in case you need it. We are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week: 503-554-2090.

The following are some of the reasons why you may want to give us a call:

• If you feel unsafe: safety escorts are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and can escort you to your destination.
• In case of an emergency: first, call 911, and then call campus public safety; we can coordinate with emergency first responders to help direct them to your location.
• If you need roadside assistance: we are happy to assist in unlocking your car or giving you a jump start if your battery is dead.
• If you’re locked out of your room: campus policy requires that you first try calling a RA from your living area. If you are unable to reach an RA, then you are welcome to call campus public safety and we will make our best effort to respond as soon as we are available.
• To report a crime or accident: if you need to report a crime or accident, we can connect you to the proper George Fox department or off-campus agency to complete and file a report.
  

A victim of a crime is never at fault and should not be blamed for his or her actions. For those who would like to know what precautions they can take in order to reduce the risk of victimization, we offer the following tips:

• Let someone know where you are going, your expected travel time, and how long you plan on being in that location.
• If you are running or walking in the evening, wear bright or reflective clothing to make yourself more visible to drivers and to help someone spot you faster in case of an emergency.
• Also, if you are running or walking in the evening, go with someone or a group of people you trust. (If you choose this option, be sure to wear the appropriate face coverings.) Stay in well-lit, highly visible areas. Stay in familiar areas and avoid shortcuts.
• Be aware of your surroundings and walk with purpose. Distractions like using your cell phone while walking can make you particularly vulnerable.
• In regards to electronics, be sure that your phone is charged before traveling. Wear only one earbud while you walk and keep your volume low.
• Do not leave valuable items in your car in an open view. Park in well-lit areas where it will be safe for you to return to at night. Take note of where you park so that you can easily locate your car again.

Pick up your free copy of George Fox’s yearbook, The Student Collective Volume VII, in Canyon Commons every day except Wednesday during finals week. We’ll be distributing them from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., so swing by!

For those who had them sent to their mailbox, the mailroom will notify you when you can pick them up. At the latest, they must be picked up by Friday, April 30, at 4:30 p.m. Employees are also welcome to pick up a copy of the yearbook for their departments.

In January 2022, selected George Fox students are traveling to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The festival is widely regarded as the most prestigious annual showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers.

Alongside the Sundance Festival, our students will also be attending the Windrider Forum, a venue for conversations about the intersections of faith and film.

The tentative dates for the trip are Jan. 23-29. Attending students will be required to notify professors in advance of anticipated absences and create appropriate academic work plans. Personal costs for students will be approximately $975 (not including food and incidentals), depending on airline and lodging costs.

You do not need to be a cinematic arts or communication major to attend. Applications from all full-time George Fox undergraduate students will be considered, but we will be limited to traveling with approximately 10 selected students.

Applications received by Wednesday, April 28, will receive first consideration. You can apply at this link.

During the Spring 2022 semester, CMCO 285/485, a selected topics course, will be offered on “Independent Cinema,” and will connect to the Sundance trip experience. Students will have the option (it is not a requirement) to register for this course to receive credit connected to the Sundance and later semester experiences.

Campus Recreation invites you to participate in a campus and canyon cleanup on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22! The cleanup will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m. We will be picking up litter throughout campus and the canyon, not doing other forms of manual labor or landscaping.

We will have an announcer and will be hyping up the game for others to get involved with and enjoy as spectators! Come early to grab a seat or a spot to watch.
