Getting tested regularly can find breast, cervical, and colon cancers early, when treatment is likely to work best. Screenings can help prevent cancer.
It’s important to consider your health throughout the year and be as proactive as possible before more serious issues arise. National Cancer Prevention Month is a great time to pause and consider what screenings you may be due for.
Some of the most common types of cancer screenings (and recommended ages) include:
- Skin (starting in your 20s or 30s, especially when at increased risk)
- Cervical (women aged 21 to 29 years screen for cervical cancer every three years with cytology alone. Women aged 30 to 65 years screen for cervical cancer every three years with cytology alone, every five years with hrHPV testing alone, or every five years with co-testing).
- Prostate (men in their 40s)
- Colorectal (starting at age 45 and continuing until age 75)
- Lung (annually in adults aged 50 to 80 who have a 20-pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years)
- Breast (every two years for women at average risk and aged 50 to 74)

University staff on Friday became aware that over a week ago someone anonymously left vulgar and highly offensive messages on a whiteboard in a campus classroom. We want to remind our community that language and/or behavior that relies on negative stereotypes or is demeaning toward individuals or groups is absolutely unacceptable for George Fox students and employees, whether it occurs in person, through social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) or anonymously.
Violations of these expectations are taken very seriously by the university, especially when directed at another because of their race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion, or disabilities. We want to remind everyone that George Fox has harassment, discrimination, and bias-related incident policies that can be viewed here.
Any incidents of harassment, discrimination or bias should be reported immediately to the student life office. We would also encourage community members to hold one another accountable for what we say and do in this important area.

This next week, we celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
This is an annual celebration where we promote communities to join in the effort to celebrate girls and women to participate in sports, knowing that the skills, confidence, strength and character gained through sports is what helps us make us all great leaders!
We will be hosting our fourth annual NGWSD coach panel discussion at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 1, in Canyon Commons 101-102. Join us for an evening of discussion led by our panel guests, Laura Schott (women’s soccer), Emily Davis (volleyball), Carol Laube (baseball) and Jen Burke (lacrosse).
Snacks, chapel credit and special giveaways will be included!
This event is open to everyone, not just women. It will be a great evening of discussions about how sports have helped lead them forward in all areas of life. We look forward to seeing you there!
Some questions include:
- As athletes and women, we all face tough situations. What was a difficult event in your life and how did you trust in God to get you through it?
- Did you have your life figured out upon graduation? What noticeable growth did you go through after graduating?
- How may a team environment help you grow in your faith?
- What do you think are collective goals for us as women in sport to further our success and continue growing our presence as athletes/coaches? How should we be focused on growing/honoring women in sports?
- What was the process like letting go of your role as an athlete?

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is hosting Scholarship Summit on campus today (Friday)! Be sure to prepare for our guests!
With around 700 visitors expected, we are asking George Fox students and employees to help extend the Be Known promise throughout the day. Here’s what you can keep in mind.
- Use street parking instead of campus parking lots. Guests will be arriving on campus between 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. and will fill all the main campus parking lots.
- Be mindful of guests in your housing area. We will have housing tours circulating through Edwards, Gulley, Pennington, HMS, and Newlin from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tour groups will be viewing dorm lobbies and a room on the first floor of each dorm.
- Plan for a busier-than-usual Canyon Commons. Guests will be going through the main server line and will be encouraged to dine in Canyon Commons 101 to 103. If you see a family looking for a spot to sit, invite them to join you!
If you have questions, email visit@georgefox.edu or call Lauren Hill at 503-554-2245.
