Volunteer to be a Life Group leader this spring

Sunday, December 18th, 2022

The Office for Spiritual Life is looking for Life Group leaders for its spring 2023 Life Groups series (the weeks of Jan. 30 through March 13). Life Groups are small groups of undergraduate students who meet together for prayer, Bible study and fellowship. Groups meet weekly for 60 to 90 minutes.

This spring, our groups will be either in person or completely via Zoom (this provides access for our George Fox Digital students). Life Groups led by a George Fox staff or faculty member will be SpiL-credit eligible in order to encourage students to engage in high-quality spiritual formation experiences that are participatory and offer ongoing community.

We welcome our employees, current seniors, alumni, family members of George Fox employees and students, and members of our wonderful local churches to consider leading a group.

To sign up, please fill out this form by Monday, Jan. 2.

Donate Christmas gift cards and clothing to SpiL’s drive

Wednesday, December 14th, 2022

This is a reminder that the Office for Spiritual Life is collecting donations of gift cards and warm clothing for Newberg Public School families and unsheltered neighbors, respectively.

Every December, we look to enlist the generosity of our campus to serve our neighbors through offering donated gift cards and warm clothing, both for the families of Newberg school children as well as folks living unsheltered during the holiday break.

A good percentage of students in the Newberg School District participate in a free lunch program, and many experience other insecurities around food, shelter and other important necessities. In response, we collect gift cards (to local grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations) to aid these children and their families. Please direct gift cards and/or donations to the Office for Spiritual Life by tomorrow (Friday).

There are also donation bins around campus for collecting warming items (jackets, gloves, hats, pants, socks, blankets, and umbrellas) for Saturday Samaritans, a Portland organization that regularly offers compassion, kindness, human connection, nutritious food, clothing, blankets and other items for our neighbors living outside without shelter.

Contact spirituallife@georgefox.edu with any questions.

Wellness Wednesdays: Create Memories

Tuesday, December 13th, 2022

For many of us, the holidays generate some of our most vivid memories. And it’s funny the odd things that stick with us. It’s often not at all the presents or the egg nog. Maybe it’s the memory of spying your Christmas gift under the tree as a kid? Maybe the smell of cinnamon cookies or orange peel, or the smell of your loved one’s special perfumes take you back to some of your favorite childhood memories?

Christmastime is filled with all kinds of wonderful smells. Scents can powerfully create and trigger our memories. Find out how that works and how to intentionally create an atmosphere of well-being and fond holiday memories this season.

Purchasing a new cell phone over break? Be aware of this info before you buy

Tuesday, December 13th, 2022

If you get a new phone, here is what you need to know so you don’t lose access to your George Fox email, Canvas, Zoom or other apps that use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). If you only use Okta Verify or Google Authenticator, the app will transfer to your new phone but not the account information.

Before purchasing a new phone, make sure that you have one of the following methods also set up:

  • SMS Authentication (text message)
  • Voice Call Authentication

Multi-Factor Authentication: Set up a Second Authentication Method

You will not be able to use Okta Verify or Google Authenticator until you go through the setup process again. Here are the directions to set up Okta Verify and/or Google Authenticator when you have a second method setup: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): I Got a New Phone.

If you got a new phone and activated it without SMS or Voice Call set up, then you must contact the Service Desk.

Questions regarding MFA? Contact the Service Desk at servicedesk@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2569.
