Noling-AuthJamieThe university welcomed a new campus pastor and dean of spiritual life, Jamie Noling-Auth, in July. She comes to George Fox from Azusa Pacific University, where she served the last nine years as associate campus pastor and director for discipleship ministries. Also, for the past four years, Jamie taught Christian ministries and New Testament courses on an adjunct basis at the university. Prior to her appointment at Azusa, she was director of student ministries at Gordon College (2003-05) and served as a senior admissions counselor at Westmont College (1999-2002). Jamie holds a doctor of ministry degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (2007), a master’s degree in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary (2003) and a bachelor’s degree in communication from Pepperdine University (1999). She lives in Newberg with husband John, who will be teaching on an adjunct basis in the university’s English department. They have two boys, Andrew (2) and Luke (5 months).


Jonanovich-HudsonCarolineThe Office of Advancement has hired a 2014 George Fox graduate, Caroline (Hudson) Jovanovich, as director of annual giving programs. For two and a half years (January of 2012 through May of 2014), she served as the student supervisor for advancement’s phonathon program, overseeing teams of student workers who called constituents to solicit support for the university. She also worked in 2013 as an intern with the city recorder’s office at Newberg City Hall. As a student at George Fox, Caroline served as the ASC special programs coordinator during the 2012-13 school year. She earned a bachelor’s degree in organizational communication this spring and recently married Peter Jovanovich. The couple lives in Newberg and attends A Jesus Church (Solid Rock) in Beaverton.


ThiessenDarbyDarby Thiessen joined George Fox last week as associate director of compensation and benefits. For the past 11 years she has worked as a human resources and compliance manager for A&I Benefit Plan Administrators in Portland, where she was responsible for all HR functions, including leading organizational development initiatives, compensation and benefits, managing labor negotiations and consulting with owners and managers on strategic issues. She worked previously as an administrator in employee services at Intel in Hillsboro, Ore., (2000-02). She also volunteers as the Banks Area Committee Chair with the Young Life organization. Darby holds a master of arts in organizational management from the University of Phoenix (2003) and a bachelor’s degree in human resource management from George Fox (1998). She and her husband, Randy, have been married for 18 years and have two children, Trevor (15) and MacKenzie (13). The Thiessens attend Evergreen Foursquare in Hillsboro.


AndersonElizabethThe university welcomed Elizabeth Anderson to campus last week to work as an area coordinator for Houses and Apartments West. She arrives from Ravencrest Chalet Bible School in Estes Park, Colo., where she was dean of women and a program and event coordinator for the past year. Before that, she spent one and a half years as a resident assistant at Tauernhof Bible School in Schladming, Austria. She also spent the 2012-13 school year as a substitute teacher in the Hillsboro School District. Elizabeth earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from George Fox in 2008.


HammarMattMatt Hammar joined the university in July as director of purchasing in the financial affairs office. For the past eight years he has worked in strategic sourcing and purchasing at Stimson Lumber Company in Portland. He has also worked in supply chain roles at Inland Empire Paper, Chinook Lumber and Nicholson Manufacturing. Matt holds a bachelor’s degree in forest products from the University of Idaho (2005). He lives in Newberg with his wife April and their three children – Erika, Laurel and Levi – and attends the Newberg Church of Christ.


ThouvenelJoeJoseph Thouvenel joined the university’s Idea Center this month as a Career and Academic (CAP) Coach. A 1999 George Fox graduate with a bachelor’s degree in history, Joe has worked the past 11 years as the associate director of program and spiritual formation at Twin Rocks Friends Camp and Conference Center. He also spent the 2007-08 school year as a teacher’s assistant at George Fox Evangelical Seminary while earning his master of arts in theological studies degree, completed in 2009. Previously, he worked for four years (1999-2003) as an undergraduate admissions counselor at George Fox. He will be supporting students and faculty in the following majors: art and design, biblical studies, Christian ministries, cinema and media communication, communication arts, English, history, international studies, journalism, music, music education, organizational communication, philosophy, politics, sociology, Spanish, theatre and undecided students (last names R-Z). He is married to Stephanie and has two young children, Hope (4) and Tad (1).

Paul Anderson (Christian Studies) wrote a forward to the reissued A Place to Stand, Elton Trueblood’s classic text that was released in e-book form by HarperOne last month. In his forward, Paul describes the importance of the book as a defense of “Basic Christianity,” a challenge to secularism and atheism arguing that Christ is the center of certitude for believing and knowing about God. Paul also wrote the forward to Rudolf Bultmann’s book The Gospel of John: A Commentary. Paul describes the book as “a provocative commentary that is arguably the most important New Testament monograph in the 20th century, perhaps second only to The Quest of the Historical Jesus by Albert Schweitzer.” The book is the first volume in the new Johannine Monograph Series that Alan Culpepper and Paul are editing.

Yune Tran (Education) attended the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities’ mixed-gender Leadership Development Institute training event at Cedar Springs Christian Retreat Center in Sumas, Wash., in June. Designed to strengthen leadership within Christian higher education, the institute featured the latest leadership research and literature and drew upon the experiences and best practices from cabinet-level leaders and other leadership experts.

Ed Higgins (English) published his poems “I Cut Myself” and “To Do Reminders” in the July 20, 2014, issue of Melancholy Hyperbole, an online poetry e-zine dedicated to poetry about longing. In addition, Ed’s poems “Faith Story” and “ok, ok, so I concede” are included in the Summer 2014 issue of the Blue Heron Review, an online poetry magazine specializing in mystical and spiritual verse.

Jim Steele (College of Business) will travel to Alexandria, Va., in mid-August to serve on the selection committee for the Michael R. Losey Research Award, an honor that recognizes an individual for significant past and ongoing research contributions that impact the HR management field. The award carries with it a $50,000 grant from the Society for Human Resource Management. Jim’s participation is part of his scholarship, as it requires him to assess the scholarly contribution of nominees’ entire body of work.

Marc Zimmerman’s (ADP) autobiography, Mostly Momentous Minutes, Mawkish Memories, and Myopic Musings of Marc from Maine: Stories of life from the Moose State and Beyond (Kindle Edition), is now available on Amazon.com.

Rebecca-HernandezThe university welcomes Rebecca Hernandez as associate vice president for intercultural engagement and faculty development. Rebecca, who will also serve as the school’s chief diversity officer, arrives from Goshen College, where she was associate dean of intercultural development and educational partnerships for the past two years. Prior to that, she was director of Goshen College’s Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning and an assistant professor of nursing (2008-12). Rebecca has also worked at Oregon Health and Science University as an assistant professor of nursing (2006-08) and as a research associate (2004-06). She holds a doctorate in human development and family studies from Oregon State University (2005), a master’s degree in public administration from Portland State University (1996) and a bachelor’s degree in secondary education-social studies from Lakeland College (1989). Rebecca has also worked in several nonprofit organizations in Oregon focused on the health and well-being of Latino and other diverse communities. Rebecca lives in Tualatin with her niece Jordan and attends Mid Valley Community Church in Woodburn.

 

Schmitt_CristinaThe university welcomes Cristina Schmitt as a graduate admissions counselor at the Portland Center, where she will specialize in serving students applying to the doctor of physical therapy and new master of social work programs. She arrives from the Stephenson Children’s Care Association, for which she served for the last six years as an on-site director for the Jackson Club, a middle-school-age after-school program and summer camp in Portland. Before that, she worked for a year as a teacher at The Children’s House Academy in Lake Oswego, Ore. Cristina earned a bachelor’s degree in educational ministries from Multnomah University in 2007. She lives in Portland and attends Village Baptist Church in Beaverton.

 

Dan Predoehl (ADP admissions) is leaving George Fox on July 22. He has accepted a position as the new director for the Emeritus Instructional Program at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif. Dan had served in ADP admissions for five years, the last three as associate director.

Blair Cash (Athletics) left the university June 30 after 15 years as sports information director. He will continue to teach at the university on an adjunct basis in the Christian studies department. He is also the official scorer for the Hillsboro Hops baseball team.

Kathi Gatlin (IDEA Center/Registrar) is leaving George Fox on July 11. She says she’s ready for life’s “next adventure,” wherever that will take her.

Corina Burke (IDEA Center) left the university last month.

Caleb Wirth (Custodial) left the university last month.

Jan Amerson (Financial Affairs) has left George Fox after eight years at the university. She has taken an accounting position with Harvest Farms of McMinnville.

Barnett-Scott ecolleagueScott Barnett, a 2011 graduate of George Fox, has returned to his alma mater to work as an admissions counselor in the undergraduate admissions office. He arrives from Baylor University, where he’s been an admissions counselor for the past two years. Previously, he spent the first half of 2012 as a human resources intern with Invisible Children of San Diego, working on a voluntary basis. Prior to his graduation from George Fox, Scott was a resident assistant (RA) at the university for three years (2008-11), and in 2010 he was named the Northwest Conference’s Sportsman of the Year as a men’s tennis player. Scott holds a bachelor’s degree in writing and literature from George Fox. He lives in Newberg and attends Northside Community Church.


Shaundrea-HirengenShaundrea Hirengen joined the university in May as a financial aid loan specialist. She has worked as a writing consultant in George Fox’s Academic Resource Center for the past year and, before that, was a new accounts manager for Parr Lumber in Hillsboro, Ore., from 2007 to 2013. She also gained office manager experience with a body shop in Hillsboro from 2004 to 2007. Shaundrea earned a bachelor’s degree in English from George Fox in May. She lives in Carlton with her husband Matt and attends A Jesus Church (formerly Solid Rock) in Portland.


O'Doherty_AshleyAshley O’Doherty joined the university in late May as an administrative assistant for adult degree programs, a position in which she has served as a temp since January. Prior to that, she was in Brazil for four months as a teacher and tutor with Excellent Global English School. Previously, she worked with clients as a personal assistant at Mid-Valley Rehabilitation Center in Amity, Ore., in 2011-12. She also spent time overseas in 2010-11, working as an intern with Stockholm Vineyard Church in Stockholm, Sweden. Ashley earned a bachelor’s degree in international studies from George Fox in 2009 and is working toward a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages through Azusa Pacific University. She lives in Newberg and attends Family Life Church in town.


Provoast_BriannaThe physical therapy program welcomes Brianna Provoast as an administrative assistant. For the past three years she’s been employed as an office administrator at Newberg Foursquare Church. Also, since 2012, she’s worked as a wedding coordinator with Champagne Wedding Coordination of Portland. She has also worked the last five months as a sales associate for Pulp & Circumstance, a gift boutique in Newberg. Brianna earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from George Fox in 2008. She lives in Newberg with husband Sam and their yellow lab, Macy, and attends Newberg Foursquare Church.


TeuscherAimeeThe university welcomes Aimee Teuscher as a recruitment and enrollment counselor for adult degree programs at the Portland Center. For the past two years she’s worked as a student success coach with InsideTrack, an organization dedicated to working with colleges and universities to improve student and institutional success. Also, since 2009, she worked for Youth Dynamic Adventures as a whitewater rafting guide who used outdoor trips to help participants draw closer to God. She also has experience as a sales manager and personal trainer, and in 2010-11 she worked at Warner Pacific College as director of communications as part of student government. Aimee earned a bachelor’s degree in health from Warner Pacific in 2012. She lives in Portland with roommates and attends A Jesus Church (formerly Solid Rock) downtown.


Trask-EliseAn alumna of George Fox, Elise Trask, returned to her alma mater last week to serve as associate director of athletics. For the past three years she has worked as the assistant director of operations for the Oregon State University women’s basketball program, assisting former George Fox and current OSU coach Scott Rueck. Among her duties were developing new branding strategies; coordinating community relations for staff and athletes; creating marketing material for recruits, fans, alumni and donors; and orchestrating the planning, logistics and execution of high-profile events related to the program. A member of the 2009 Division III national champion women’s basketball team at George Fox, Elise earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the university in 2010. She is married to former All-Northwest Conference baseball catcher Brent Trask. The couple plans to move to Newberg.


Ethan Burke (IT) left George Fox on June 3 to pursue work as a freelance cinematographer and camera operator. He plans to work on films, do broadcast multi-camera production and create market videos for businesses.

Paul Otto (History) published an article, “Christian, Providential, and Ecclesiastical: Graphic Christian Perspectives on History,” in the Winter/Spring 2014 issue of Fides et Historia, a semi-annual peer-reviewed academic journal that concerns the intersection of Christian faith and historical inquiry.

Mark Pothoff (Student Life) presented and facilitated a dialogue titled “Transgenderism Roundtable Discussion” at the Association for Christians in Student Development’s (ACSD) annual conference at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., June 2-5. The presentation focused on how institutions are responding to transgender students and how campuses are engaging in the dialogue and also shared emerging best practices. Rick Muthiah (IDEA Center) and Mark also presented “I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up: Institutional Approaches to Reach Struggling Students,” a workshop that focused on identification and intervention of students who are at risk and ways to help students thrive intellectually, spiritually, socially and emotionally.

On his second Fulbright Specialist Visit to Radboud University of Nijmegen (Netherlands), Paul Anderson (Christian Studies) recently presented the lectures “The Spirituality of Jesus,” “The Johannine Situation” and “The Riddles of the Fourth Gospel.” He also presented a paper in Groningen, the Netherlands, at the European Association for the Study of Religion on “Expansive Parabolic Construction from Jesus to John and Luke” and presented lectures at the University of Mainz (Germany) on “From Crisis to Christ: A Contextual Introduction to the New Testament,” “Metaphors and Parables in Bi-Optic Perspective” and “Contextual Issues in Corinth.” His book, Following Jesus: The Heart of Faith and Practice, received four reviews in the latest issue of Quaker Religious Thought, to which Paul contributed a response. Paul also contributed a review of The Oxford Handbook of Quaker Studies in that same issue. Finally, Paul was quoted by Ruth Haley Barton, author and founder of the Transforming Center, in her article “Pursuing God’s Will Together: When the Resurrected Christ Leads His Church,” published on the Transforming Center’s website.

Ed Higgins’ (English) poem “Icarus” is in the 2014 spring issue of shufPoetry, a biannual Southern California-based journal of experimental poetry and mixed media. In addition, he published his poems “The Young Couple in the Stairwell I Passed on My Way to Teaching Medieval World Literature Class,” “Poetry Lesson” and “Noon Campus” in the Spring 2014 issue of Oregon English Journal. More recently, his piece “stone silence” appeared in the June 2014 issue of The Shot Glass Journal, an online journal devoted to short poetry.

Clark_MeganMegan Clark recently joined the marketing communications office as a video producer. She will be a senior this fall working toward a bachelor’s degree in cinema and media communication. Since August, she has worked as a CMCO work-study student and has produced a number of videos currently used on the university’s website, including the “FoxTalks” segments on the College of Christian Studies site. Formerly, she served as a media production assistant in IT (2011-13) and worked as a resident assistant and summer RA (2012-13). Megan lives in Newberg and attends Door of Hope in Portland.


Forbes_KimberlyThe university welcomes Kimberly Forbes as an accounting specialist. She arrives from St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg, where she served as director of religious education and as a youth minister from April of 2013 until February of this year. Previously she worked as an office manager at the Grant Murphy State Farm office in Hillsboro, Ore., from 2010 to 2012. She has many years of banking and finance experience. Kim studied biology at Western New England College in the early 1990s. She lives in Hillsboro with her husband, Brian, and their four children: Katie, Tim, Michael and Ellie. She and her family attend St. Peter Catholic Church.


Oxford_MacMac Oxford joined the university in late April as a media production specialist, a position he’s held at the university on a temporary basis since December of 2013. Previously, he worked as an associate manager for Regal Entertainment Group (2013) and as a videographer for Hybrid Moon Video Production (2012). He currently owns a video production company with two other George Fox alumni called Blue Anchor Films. Mac earned a bachelor’s degree in cinema and media communication from George Fox in 2012. He lives in Portland with his wife Kimberly and son Josiah (1) and attends Calvary Chapel Southeast.

Martha Iancu (Faculty Emerita) was recently presented with the Mary Finocchiaro Award for Excellence in Nonpublished Pedagogical Material at the 2014 TESOL Annual Convention & English Language Expo in Portland, Ore. The award was given for teaching materials she wrote to accompany the book In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson by Bette Bao Lord. The award recognized Martha as a leader in the TESOL field who has helped advance opportunities for English learners and their educators. To support whole-language techniques in reading classes, Martha has created teaching materials for 30 fiction and nonfiction books.

Rob Felton (Marketing Communications) and wife Kim welcomed their second child, Natalie Lucia, in the early-morning hours of May 8 at St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland. Natalie was born in the pregnancy’s 31st week and was 3 pounds, 15 ounces, while measuring 16 1/2 inches long. She joins an older sister, Madeleine (2). The Feltons wish to thank members of the George Fox community for their prayers over the last few weeks.

Rusty (Spiritual Life) and Stephanie (Student Life) St. Cyr welcomed their third child, Jack Henri, on April 9. He weighed 9 pounds, 1 ounce and was born at Providence Newberg Medical Center. He joins sisters Ella Sophia (5) and Matea Frances (2).

CorvinoTrenton2014An alumnus of the seminary, Trenton Corvino, joined the university this month to serve as a graduate admissions counselor for the seminary. Since graduating with a master’s degree in ministry leadership in 2012, Trenton has worked as a program director for the Portland After School Tennis and Education program, leading a year-round after-school nonprofit operation for 60 at-risk children. He worked for the same organization as a tennis academy director, coach and tutor from 2010 to 2012, and, before that, as a ministry staff member from 2007 to 2010 at the Onyx House, a college-age church outreach in Eugene, Ore. While a student at the University of Oregon, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 2006, Trenton was a resident assistant in housing from 2004 to 2006. Trenton enjoys playing tennis and is a certified professional tennis instructor. He lives in Portland and attends Theophilus Church in Portland.

 

Sheila Bartlett’s (Seminary) final day at George Fox Evangelical Seminary is April 30. She is retiring from the university after 21 years of service. She and husband Doug will be redoing their kitchen cabinets as part of a remodeling project. She also plans to have a weed-free garden and care for her 90-year-old mom.

Chris Schlarbaum (Student Financial Services) is leaving George Fox after 31 years of service. Her final day at the university will be this Friday, May 2. She plans to spend her summer traveling and playing with her grandchildren.

Carrie Bohl (Advancement) is leaving the university this week after 16 years of service. She plans to concentrate on building her home-based business. A farewell reception for her is scheduled for Friday, May 2, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the advancement office at Coyote Place (700 Deborah Road).

Eilene Newman (Portland Center Library) is retiring from the university after working at George Fox for 22 years. Her final day at the school is April 30. She and husband Bob plan to enjoy a slower pace, more road trips, more gardening, pool time and family fun.

Clint (Center for Peace and Justice) and Sarah Baldwin (Spiritual Life/Campus Pastor) are leaving the university and moving to Kentucky, where Sarah has accepted the position of vice president of student development at Asbury University. The Baldwins arrived at George Fox in 2005. A farewell reception for them is set from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, in the Stevens Center’s Duke Atrium.

Kevin T. Jones (Communication Arts) and Carol Brazo (Education) published “Cultivating a community of truth through critical pedagogy when faced with resistance: teaching my gender students how to “ride the bus”” in the March 2014 edition of the International Journal of Innovation, Education and Research, published in the United Kingdom. The essay explores how to face resistance from students in the classroom on controversial topics through critical pedagogy.

Kevin also took five communication arts students to present research papers at the Northwest Communication Association annual conference April 17-19, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Junior Zach Baker presented his essay “Using LMX Theory to examine group experience and trust.” Juniors Ariel Hortert and Allison Walsh presented their paper on “Recognition of non-verbal warmth, self-disclosure and the effect on closeness in various relationships.” Jones served as critic and responded to a panel titled “Rhetorical agents of change.” Also attending the conference were sophomore Bethany Widdicombe and first-year student LaQuae Aughtman.

Two of Ed Higgins’ (English) poems, “To Do Reminders“ and “the dung beetle,” are published in the April issue of Gutter Eloquence, an online poetry journal.

Steve Sherwood (Christian Studies) wrote a blog post, “The Anointing at Bethany and the Internet Age,” for the Missio Alliance’s website, appearing on April 16.
