Urgent: SMS multi-factor authentication is being removed for safety reasons

Tuesday, September 30th, 2025

Dear university users (students, faculty and staff),

This is an important security change from the George Fox University IT department. Our commitment to protecting your account and information is our top priority.

What is happening and why?

To align with industry security standards and defend against modern cyberattacks, we are removing SMS (text messages) and phone calls as multi-factor authentication (MFA) methods for all university systems in the near future.

  • SMS is no longer safe: Industry security standards now consider SMS-based codes to be the weakest form of MFA. They are vulnerable to attacks like SIM swapping, phishing, and interception.
  • The change: Once this change is in effect, you will no longer be able to use a text message code to log in to university systems such as Gmail, Canvas, and MyGeorgeFox. If you haven’t set up a new authentication method by then you will no longer be able to access your George Fox account.

Wellness Wednesday: The ‘Miles for Meals’ challenge is on!

Tuesday, September 30th, 2025

It’s go time! The “Miles for Meals” challenge starts now! It’s incredible to see new teams forming and rallying together. This is more than just a challenge, it’s our community-wide effort to support the vital work of the Bruin Community Pantry while boosting our own health and wellness.

Don’t get left at the starting line! You have until this Sunday, Oct. 5, to register. Joining the movement is as easy as 1-2-go! Here are the steps:

  1. Fundraise/donate: Visit this page to make a contribution or set up your own fundraising goal for the pantry. Every dollar makes a difference!
  2. Join your team: Use these simple instructions to log in to the Providence wellness platform, where you can create a new team or join an existing one (it’s the same easy system as last year). Once you sync your device, your miles will be tracked automatically!

Remember, every bit of movement counts! Whether you’re walking, running, swimming or dancing, use the step converter tool to turn all your activity into miles for your team. We’ve also created this step converter using the information in the PDF for steps conversion. Users can make a copy, then enter the minutes of activity to have the step equivalent calculated.

We are so excited to see what we can accomplish together! Go Bruin community!

Help teach English as a second language in Community Language Program classes

Tuesday, September 30th, 2025

Do you want to teach English professionally, perhaps as a second language? Are you looking for experience? Are you interested in culture and people? The English Department invites you to partner with the Newberg community as an English teacher in our Community Language Program!

Classes will take place at Edwards Elementary School on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. You can choose to participate on only Tuesdays, only Thursdays, or both!

At each session, you and a few other college students will be in charge of teaching either English or Spanish as a second language. Tasks will include lesson planning, in-class instruction, teacher debriefing and logistical coordination. Teamwork is everything in this job, so good communication is essential, both with your fellow teachers and with your students.

When you’re in the classroom, instruction can look like whiteboard grammar lessons, whole-group games, partner activity work, and casual conversation practice. If you’re not in front of the class on the whiteboard, you’ll be floating around the classroom observing and aiding any students who need help.

Most importantly, you’ll have so much fun! You’ll get so much out of this experience, and you’ll make special connections with your students. You’ll also have something incredible to add to your CV, resume, and/or graduate school and job applications.

If you have any questions, reach out to Arabelle Bruner at abruner24@georgefox.edu.

Do us the honor of joining in the festivities:

  • All proposals (scholarly or otherwise) should be directed to gfu-english@georgefox.edu by Oct. 15. Please include your CV, along with your proposal of no more than 250 words.
  • Registration information for presenters and attendees will be forthcoming.
