Use these tips to stay healthy during winter
Winter months bring colder weather, less sunlight, and an increased risk of illness. Taking care of your body and environment is essential for staying well. Here are some ways to maintain your health this season:
- Prioritize sleep – Aim for seven to nine hours of rest each night to support your immune system and overall well-being.
- Stay hydrated – It’s easy to forget to drink water when it’s cold, but staying hydrated helps with energy, focus and immune function.
- Eat nutritious foods – Fuel your body with a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and protein to keep your energy up and support your health.
- Wash your hands regularly – Germs spread quickly, especially in shared spaces. Keep your hands clean to reduce your chances of getting sick.
- Keep your space clean – A cluttered, dusty or messy room can contribute to allergies, stress and the spread of germs. To create a healthier living space, regularly wipe down surfaces, wash your bedding and towels, and take out the trash.
Feeling under the weather? Don’t panic. Getting sick is normal and usually not a big deal. Here’s what to do if you get sick:
- Manage your symptoms – Over-the-counter medications like pain relievers, fever reducers, cough suppressants and decongestants can help ease discomfort, but they won’t speed up recovery. Rest, hydration and proper nutrition are key.
- Monitor your health – Most illnesses improve within a few days, but if your symptoms last more than a week or worsen, visit our Health and Counseling Center on campus or utilize TimelyCare, our online medical support.
- Communicate and get support – If you’re struggling to keep up with coursework due to illness, reach out to your professors as soon as possible. They can help you navigate missed assignments and deadlines.
Taking steps to stay healthy is important, but if you do get sick, give yourself the time and care you need to recover!
