A resource for employees: Students in Distress folder

Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024

The Office of Student Life would like to provide information about what we can do at George Fox when concerns arise about a student’s behavior. While some of the information is more specific to traditional undergraduate students (due to the residential nature of these programs, etc.), some of the information applies to graduate and accelerated online degree students and programs as well.

In the past, we have delivered brightly colored folders with information for staff and faculty to use as a resource in situations where a student in crisis needs intervention. There was also information about employee responsibilities regarding FERPA and guidance for campus emergencies.

To reduce paper and make these materials accessible to you online, we have created a folder in Google Drive. Please bookmark this folder for quick reference. You must use your George Fox email to log into the folder.

For more information, please contact Jere Witherspoon at jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2316.

Enjoy basketball? Come to Hadlock for Noon Hoops

Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024

George Fox’s longest-running wellness program (over 35 years), Noon Hoops, brings university employees and graduate students together to play basketball every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at noon.

We’d like to inform anyone who recently joined the George Fox community of this special program and invite you to come get in on the fun! Games are friendly and mildly competitive (and much more enjoyable than church or city leagues). We are all about getting exercise and having fun.

Players’ skill levels vary, so we try creating matchups between people with similar abilities. Games are to 11 by twos and threes. Bring your gear (there are locker rooms and showers), and we’ll see you on the courts at Hadlock Student Center.

If you have any questions, reach out to Bill Buhrow at bbuhrow@georgefox.edu.

Have questions about Medicare? Attend an upcoming virtual seminar

Monday, September 2nd, 2024

When it’s time to transition to Medicare, there can be several important and sometimes confusing details to consider.

To help ensure you have the correct information when making decisions, George Fox has partnered with Hilary Starnes and Jasmyn Sprague from Providence Health Assurance to provide Medicare 101 seminars. These virtual seminars, scheduled Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 18-19, will help you understand the basics of Medicare in an easy-to-understand overview.

Seminar topics:

  • What is Medicare and why it is important?
  • Addressing the different parts of Medicare (the A, B, C & D’s of Medicare)
  • What are the differences between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement?
  • When you should consider enrolling into Medicare, and what is the process
  • What are the costs to be enrolled in Medicare?
  • What to consider if you are planning to continue to work past age 65
  • Learn how to avoid late enrollment penalties
  • How to transition from an employer group plan to a Medicare plan
  • Understand how to manage a Health Savings Account (HSA)

This seminar is purely educational, and there will be no discussion about specific carrier plan information. The only purpose of this seminar is to provide George Fox employees with valuable Medicare information. We hope this helps you and your loved ones as you plan for the eventual transition to Medicare.

You do not need to be eligible for Medicare to attend this seminar. The presentation will take approximately one hour, but we will have additional time at the end of the presentation to answer any questions that you may have.

We hope you will join if you are able! Spouses and parents are welcome to join. You can register for the 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, seminar here and the Thursday, Sept. 19, noon meeting here.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Questions? Contact Aga Kasprzyk at akasprzyk@georgefox.edu.
