Mail Services: Shipping methods will not be disrupted as possible UPS strike looms

Thursday, July 13th, 2023

With the looming threat of UPS going on strike in August, Mail Services wants to assure you that the university’s shipping methods will not be disrupted with regard to sending packages out.

Unfortunately, we cannot control who delivers to the university and how that is all going to resolve if UPS does go on strike. We are grateful to have USPS and FedEx as great business partners, and they are willing to step up and help us out wherever they can.

Please know that we are watching the Teamster negotiations closely so see how this develops. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Richard Silver at rsilver@georgefox.edu.

Reminder: Be aware of construction happening near Crisman Crossing

Thursday, July 13th, 2023

We’re excited to announce that construction is entering the next stage! This week, the construction fencing around the end of Crisman Crossing will be updated. Crisman Crossing will no longer be accessible on the west side, as the entrance to the bridge will be updated to the new and improved pedestrian path.

An overview of the closed area can be seen here. The fencing changes will be worked on today, with construction beginning on Monday. Construction of the new pedestrian pathway will continue over the next three to four weeks in order to be completed before the students return for the start of the new academic year.

Please use the Hess Creek crossing via Beebe/Carey/Willcuts if walking to the other side of campus, to avoid the construction area. By starting now, we should have a beautiful pedestrian path to Crisman Crossing completed around the time of the August all-employee meeting.

If you have any questions, feel free to email plant services at plantservices@georgefox.edu.

Be aware of heat advisory today through Sunday

Thursday, July 13th, 2023

According to the National Weather Service, this region is under a heat advisory for today (Friday) through Sunday, July 16, at 9 p.m. Temperatures are expected to range between 93 and 98 degrees in some areas.

Here are some tips to beat the heat:

  • If you are working in a building without air conditioning or outdoors, please schedule work during the coolest parts of the day. Take advantage of cooler buildings such as the Murdock Library, Klages, or Canyon Commons.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water every 20 minutes.
  • During the hottest part of the day, check on fellow employees every hour to two hours. Know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

Temperatures will return to the mid-80s during the first part of next week, with anticipation of another heat event by the end of the week.

If you have any questions about best practices during high heat, please reach out to Kim Knoernschild, the university’s environmental health and safety specialist, at kknoernschild@georgefox.edu.

It’s time to register for parking permits

Wednesday, July 12th, 2023

Parking permit registration is now open for students who are bringing a vehicle to campus this fall. Here are some things to be aware of:

  • Before registration, please first make sure that you have filled out the Housing and Meal Plan Intent Form to determine your status as a commuter or resident. If your housing status has not been confirmed, you will not be able to complete the vehicle registration.
  • If you have a permit from last year and DID not change vehicles or housing, you DO NOT need to register again.
  • If you have changed housing status or you are bringing a different vehicle, you will need to contact us at Campus Safety to make the changes.

Please carefully consider bringing a vehicle to campus, as our parking will be limited this year. To learn more, visit our Parking Permit Policies page.

If you have any questions or need assistance please contact us at 503-554-2090 or campussafety@georgefox.edu.

‘Thriving Together:’ Physical Health Week

Sunday, July 9th, 2023

Your physical health challenge this week is to stay hydrated! Being dehydrated can impact all areas of your body. Studies show that mild dehydration can impair many aspects of brain function, including regulating your mood and concentration. It can even alter your body temperature control, reduce your motivation, and cause an increase in fatigue.

To stay healthy and hydrated this week (July 10-16), we challenge you to drink at least 90 ounces of water per day. Break out your favorite water bottle and join in! Here’s a breakdown of how many water bottles per day you need to drink based on common water bottle sizes:

  • 12 oz = 7 ½ water bottles per day
  • 16 oz = approx. 5 ½ water bottles per day
  • 18 oz = 5 water bottles per day
  • 20 oz = 4 ½ water bottles per day
  • 24 oz = approx. 4 water bottles per day
  • 32 oz =approx. 3 water bottles per day
  • 40 oz = approx. 2 ½ water bottles per day

Fill out this Google Sheet with your name and email, and as you drink water throughout each day, make note of how many bottles you consumed on the spreadsheet. Everyone who participates the full week will be entered into a drawing to receive one of five George Fox tumbler cups!
