Guest speaker Todd Deatherage will present a lecture, titled “What Makes for Peace? Lessons from the Road to Jericho,” at the university’s Woolman Peacemaking Forum, scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight (Thursday) in Hoover 105.

Our guest will talk about the people who are peacemakers and the principles that guide them. Deatherage is a devout Christian who spent 16 years in senior positions in the legislative and executive branches of the U.S. government before cofounding the Telos Group.

From 2005 to 2009, he was chief of staff in the Secretary of State’s Office of Policy Planning at the U.S. State Department. He also spent two years as senior advisor in the department’s Office of International Religious Freedom, where he specialized in religious freedom in the Middle East.

The College of Physical Therapy’s “Run for Africa” returns on Saturday, May 6!

This event raises money to support our annual service trip to Uganda. People can participate in a 5K run or a one-mile walk or run. For more details and to sign up, go here.

Hey Bruins, today (Thursday) we are hosting a mental health forum in Wheeler Gym at 7 p.m. Please join us as we dive deeper into topics that are very relevant to you as athletes!

We’ll cover the following topics:

• Understanding and dealing with athlete burnout
• Eating disorders and body image
• Anxiety and depression
• How can we make competition healthy?
• Ways to handle the pressures of being a student-athlete
• How to grow away from being “just an athlete”
• Healing and growing from the past

You can pick and choose the topics that you want to learn about. Come in, pick a table that has the topic you want, talk and listen for 15 minutes, and then head to the next table. There will be a doctoral student leading each table. Chapel credit is available!

We will be playing games of volleyball using balloons, ping pong and pool this Saturday, March 11, from 10 to 11 a.m. Card games will also be available. Come for a special time of activities and connection with some of the residents!

The city of Newberg is calling all freshmen, sophomores and juniors to consider applying to serve on a local committee, commission or board!

As a student commissioner, you will engage with city leaders, provide input on action items, and serve as a voting member. Meetings typically range from four to 12 times a year, and the meeting format varies by committee. Experience on a committee stands out on a resume and will provide excellent experience in interpersonal communication skills.

Applications are open and will close on Sunday, March 19, at 11:59 p.m. Student terms will run until Dec. 31. Learn more and apply here.

The university community is invited to the Interprofessional Primary Care Institute’s “Focused Acceptance & Commitment Therapy” event May 9-11.

Both in-person and Zoom sessions will be hosted, with Tuesday’s event taking place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and both Wednesday’s and Thursday’s meetings from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sessions will feature Dr. Patricia Robinson and Dr. Kirk Strosahl, founders of Focused Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and internationally renowned psychologists.

This CME is an excellent cross-training opportunity in behavioral theory and practice for the medical, dental, pharmacy and nursing professions.

The Apologetics Initiative and the C. S. Lewis Initiative invite you to a special presentation by Dr. Paul Lorenzini’s, “C.S. Lewis’s The Abolition of Man Eighty Years Later: An Engineer’s Perspective,” at 5 p.m. this Monday, March 13, in Hoover 103.

Eighty years ago, Lewis published his most highly regarded book, The Abolition of Man, in which he critiques the secularization of Western cultures and warns that, unchecked, the consequences for modern humanity are significant and destructive.

By comparing Lewis’s projections with modern cultural critiques, Dr. Lorenzini asks how a revived view of Lewis’s analysis might inform a modern apologetic. All are welcome to join us for this thought-provoking presentation.

Join UREC for a trip up to Mt. Hood to go cross country skiing this Saturday, March 11!

The trip is open to all students. University Recreation provides all of the transportation, food, gear and instruction. No prior skiing experience is necessary!
