MLK scholar Scott Finnie speaks on Newberg campus next week

Tuesday, March 8th, 2022

How does Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s hopeful, reconciling and redemptive leadership – as exhibited in his acclaimed Letter from Birmingham Jail, written in 1963 – reverberate today?

On Tuesday, March 15, all are invited to a free special presentation, “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” presented by Scott Finnie, PhD, a King scholar and faculty member in Eastern Washington University’s Africana Education Program and Department of History since 1992. The event is set from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Finnie’s visit is the keynote address of the 2022 John Woolman Peacemaking Forum. The presentation will focus on how King’s leadership changed the Civil Rights Movement and how his peacemaking principles still apply to our world today.

Preceding the talk will be a Steinfeldt Peace Scholars Symposium from 6 to 6:30 p.m. in the Hoover lobby, where current upperclass students committed to peace studies will exhibit their projects.

The event is being sponsored by George Fox’s Center for Peace and Justice, which is also providing refreshments.

Local city leaders meet on campus tonight to discuss political civility

Tuesday, March 8th, 2022

Troubled by political polarization in their communities, leaders from three Oregon cities will share about their efforts to build local political civility in a panel discussion at George Fox from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) in Hoover 105.

Silverton mayor Kyle Palmer, Newberg mayor Rick Rogers, Canby community leader Ray Keen, and Newberg Downtown Coalition Executive Director Polly Peterson will discuss the threats to their communities’ well-being that come from bitter political divisions, and how they are working to heal those divisions and move political discourse into a more productive mode.

The event will be moderated by Ron Mock, director of the George Fox Civility Project, an initiative launched during the 2020-21 academic year out of concern about the polarization and alienation in political culture at every level (national, state and local). It sponsors events, publishes a newsletter, and maintains a website with information about civility.

Masks will be required to attend the session in person, in keeping with university policy and state regulations. Those who prefer to attend remotely can connect via Zoom. A link will be available on the Civility Project website or by contacting the project at civility@georgefox.edu.

There will be time for questions from the audience, including questions submitted via Zoom from those attending remotely.

Indoor mask mandate ends at midnight on March 11

Tuesday, March 8th, 2022

The state of Oregon is lifting its indoor mask mandate at midnight on Friday, March 11, and George Fox is following the state’s decision.

Starting Saturday, March 12, masks will no longer be required indoors with the exception of medical facilities (e.g., Health and Counseling Center, physical therapy clinic, etc.). Some medical education programs may still need to require masks due to their training requirements.

After March 12, individuals are welcome to continue wearing face coverings. We ask that community members respect the choices of their colleagues and peers.
