Our interprofessional team is delighted to invite the George Fox community to a virtual presentation: “Get Cultured! Decolonizing and Decentering Whiteness in the Healthcare Workforce.†It is 100% designed, developed and delivered by healthcare professionals who identify with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities.
This event, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on March 11-12, is for everyone, and if you identify as white, this is a special opportunity to listen and learn. We will learn about ways to decolonize and decenter whiteness in our workforce, dynamic sizing, and other methods to improve our clinical care.
Additionally, this CME will focus on two important clinical topics: persistent pain and chronic disease.
This is a soulful opportunity to hear and deeply reflect on the voices and lived experiences of our BIPOC-identifying colleagues. For more information and to register, go here. It is free to George Fox employees and students.
Questions? Please contact Tammy O’Doherty at todohert@georgefox.edu.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will be hosting Scholarship Summit on campus this Friday, March 4. With around 300 visitors expected on campus, we are asking George Fox students and employees to help extend the Be Known promise throughout the day.
Here’s what you can keep in mind:
- Use street parking instead of campus parking lots. Guests will be arriving on campus Friday morning between 8 and 8:30 a.m. and will fill all the main campus parking lots.
- Be mindful of guests in your living area. There will be housing tours circulating through Edwards, Gulley, Pennington, and HMS from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tour groups will be viewing dorm lobbies and a room on the first floor of each dorm.
- Plan for a busier than usual Canyon Commons. Guests will use the main server line and will be encouraged to dine in CCD 101-103. If you see a family looking for a spot to sit, invite them to join you!
If you have questions, email visit@georgefox.edu or call Lauren Hill at 503-554-2245.

How does Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s hopeful, reconciling and redemptive leadership – as exhibited in his acclaimed Letter from Birmingham Jail, written in 1963 – reverberate today?
On Tuesday, March 15, all are invited to a free special presentation, “Letter from Birmingham Jail,†presented by Scott Finnie, PhD, a King scholar and faculty member in Eastern Washington University’s Africana Education Program and Department of History since 1992. The event is set from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105.
Finnie’s visit is the keynote address of the 2022 John Woolman Peacemaking Forum. The presentation will focus on how King’s leadership changed the Civil Rights Movement and how his peacemaking principles still apply to our world today.
Preceding the talk will be a Steinfeldt Peace Scholars Symposium from 6 to 6:30 p.m. in the Hoover lobby, where current upperclass students committed to peace studies will exhibit their projects.
The event is being sponsored by George Fox’s Center for Peace and Justice, which is also providing refreshments.

Troubled by political polarization in their communities, leaders from three Oregon cities will share about their efforts to build local political civility in a panel discussion at George Fox from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, in Hoover 105.
Silverton mayor Kyle Palmer, Newberg mayor Rick Rogers, Canby community leader Ray Keen, and Newberg Downtown Coalition Executive Director Polly Peterson will discuss the threats to their communities’ well-being that come from bitter political divisions, and how they are working to heal those divisions and move political discourse into a more productive mode.
The event will be moderated by Ron Mock, director of the George Fox Civility Project, an initiative launched during the 2020-21 academic year out of concern about the polarization and alienation in political culture at every level (national, state and local). It sponsors events, publishes a newsletter, and maintains a website with information about civility.
Masks will be required to attend the session in person, in keeping with university policy and state regulations. Those who prefer to attend remotely can connect via Zoom. A link will be available on the Civility Project website or by contacting the project at civility@georgefox.edu.
There will be time for questions from the audience, including questions submitted via Zoom from those attending remotely.

The Office of Student Life thought it would be helpful to provide information about what we can do at George Fox when concerns arise about a student’s behavior.
In the past, we have delivered brightly colored folders with information for staff and faculty to use as a resource should the unforeseeable take place: a student in crisis needing intervention.
In order to reduce paper, as well as make these materials accessible to you online, we have created a folder in Google Drive. Please bookmark this folder for quick reference.
If you have any questions or need assistance in the use of this information, contact Jere Witherspoon, student care specialist, at jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu.
