Commuter students: Please be sure to review Student Handbook

Wednesday, August 15th, 2018

Commuter students: Please be reminded that you should take time to review the Student Handbook. Since you are living off campus and are not attending all-area meetings through Residence Life, this is your reminder from the Office of Commuter Life to review our community’s expectations of you.

The Undergraduate Student Handbook is significant resource that serves to articulate the lifestyle standards, community policies and other aspects of being a member of the George Fox community. While every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the information in this handbook, it is not a binding contract and it may be changed, updated, amended and/or modified at any time by action of appropriate university personnel.

Students of George Fox University are responsible for reviewing and adhering to all published university policies. We hope that you find this searchable handbook to be a tool that is both informative and helpful. The handbook can be found at studenthandbook.georgefox.edu.

If you have any questions regarding the Handbook, please email studentlife@georgefox.edu.

University launches Bruin Community Pantry this fall

Wednesday, August 15th, 2018

The Office of Student Life is excited to announce the start of Bruin Community Pantry, an initiative seeking to address the real problem of hunger (“food insecurity”) on campus. It’s our goal to help meet the needs of community members who, for one reason or another, do not have access to enough healthy food.

Four different components of Bruin Community Pantry include:

Food Pantry
All George Fox community members have access to the pantry, located in the Roberts Center (Room 110). Community food drives will be held to provide non-perishable items for the pantry, and athletic teams will facilitate food drives during home games.

Contact student life for a list of items non-perishable food and household items needed for the pantry. Donations are now being accepted in the student life office on the third floor of the Stevens Center.

Hospitality
Partnerships with local businesses for “gifts in kind” have been established with Bon Appetit, Newberg’s Grocery Outlet and Ray’s Produce. A variety of pre-packaged foods are available for students, located at hospitality tables in the student life office, spiritual life office, and the Intercultural Resource Center (Moore House). The tables are open during office hours, which are generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Duke Athletic Center will host a peanut butter and jelly sandwich bar that is available to all George Fox students.

Leftovers
The student life office will arrange for quality leftover food to be stored in a refrigerator in our office. All food donated will be adequately contained and dated. Food not picked up in the appropriate amount of time will be disposed of.

Students participating in this program can sign up by contacting our office. A waiver is required for anyone participating in the Leftovers program.

Outreach
Partnering with existing local outreach initiatives facilitated by spiritual life, students who want to support their efforts will be connected to their programs.

We live in a society with easy access to processed food. When you eat whole foods, you’re getting food in its natural state. This aspect of our outreach will endeavor to provide cooking classes in various living areas on campus using recipes from “Eat well on $4 a day, Good and Cheap.”

For more information, visit this link or contact Jere Witherspoon in the student life office (jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2312).

Call for stationery orders

Tuesday, August 14th, 2018

Now is the time to order university stationery. The collective order helps keep costs low – the higher the volume, the lower the cost. Consequently, it is most economical to overestimate needs and store a small surplus.

I will be accepting orders through Wednesday, Aug. 22. For order instructions, go to the marketing communications website. Continue to purchase all non-departmental stationery (including “second-sheet letterhead”) through the university’s Office of Print Services.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you,
– Danette Newkirk (dnewkirk@georgefox.edu)

Summer student employees: Please park in your designated areas

Tuesday, August 14th, 2018

With the return of staff and faculty to campus today, summer student employees need to now park where their 2018-19 parking permits allow in order to free up the staff lots and visitor rows for staff and faculty who have returned to work.

The 2018-19 parking brochure is available on the Campus Public Safety website if you are unsure where your permit allows you to park, or come and see the parking map in person at the Campus Public Safety office.

Thank you for all of your hard work this summer!

Staff, administrators and faculty: Please pass this on to your summer student employees.

Serve in the Bruin Brigade this football season

Tuesday, August 14th, 2018

It takes an army of volunteers to ensure that all the logistics for football games are handled in an organized and efficient way. For that reason, George Fox organized the Bruin Brigade, consisting of a group of volunteers who will handle everything from directing game-day traffic and selling tickets to serving as parking lot coordinators and cleaning up after the game.

There are four home games this season, and we need volunteers to serve this year! Please reach out if you are considering finding a new way to be involved while supporting George Fox football and connecting to the community.

Please vacate these lots for Welcome Weekend move-in day

Tuesday, August 14th, 2018

Welcome Weekend is almost here! In order for our hundreds of new students to have a seamless move-in experience, we need extra cooperation from the staff and students already here on Thursday, Aug. 23.

  • If your on-campus residence is Pennington, Edwards, Weesner Village, Hobson, Macy, Sutton, LeShana, Gulley or Brandt, we need you to vacate those lots Wednesday evening and stay out of them until Friday morning.
  • If you normally park in the Le Shana lot, please move your cars as close to Fulton Street as possible so that the area in front of the building is clear, or move your cars to the Bauman or Morse lot Wednesday night.
  • Everyone in the Pennington lot and “lollipop area,” Edwards or Weesner Village needs to move to the lot on 99W Wednesday night.
  • Please keep Sheridan Street clear for easier access for our incoming students.
  • The Morse lot and the front lot only of the Roberts Center are also available for Thursday. The lot in between the Roberts Center and Gulley and Brandt halls must be vacated Wednesday night.
  • If you are going on a retreat next week, you MUST move your cars to the Bauman, Morse or 99W lots before leaving on your retreat. Please don’t block up the entire moving-in flow with your left-behind cars!

Questions? Please contact Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090 and also view the parking brochure on the CPS web pages for lot locations.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation to help make next Thursday be the best day ever for our new students!

Reminder: Fitness Center Information

Sunday, August 12th, 2018

We trust you are excited about the new Hadlock Student Center (HSC)! Assuming everything continues on schedule, the fitness center portion of the facility will be open with limited hours (tentatively 4 to 9 p.m.) beginning Monday, Aug. 27 (anticipated grand opening and full hours will begin Monday, Sept. 3). This is subject to change if there are unexpected delays in construction.

If you use the fitness center in Wheeler, you’ll notice most of the space has been cleared in anticipation of remodeling it for athletics’ use since the HSC will be opening soon. Due to this upcoming remodeling of the Wheeler fitness center space, some equipment has been moved into the adjacent dance studio space (Wheeler 211) for general student and employee use until the HSC opens. The squat racks are also still available for use and are in their original spot.

There are more limited hours for this interim space in Wheeler, as it will now be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed Saturday and Sunday). We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience during this transitional period and trust that the new space in the HSC will make it worth the wait!

Questions? Contact Rob Simpson (simpsonr@georgefox.edu) regarding the HSC or Adam Puckett (apuckett@georgefox.edu) regarding the Wheeler Sports Center space.

Important Vehicle Registration and Parking Information for Commuters

Sunday, August 12th, 2018

With the new academic year comes new changes in parking policies. This letter is to inform you of those changes ahead of time so you can act accordingly.

All changes mentioned in this email begin with the 2018-19 academic year. The university, not Campus Public Safety (formerly Security Services), has elected to bill all commuters for your annual parking permit automatically.

Your student account will be charged each semester through Student Financial Services. Additionally, there is an increase in the cost of the parking permit: $100 per semester ($200 annually).

When you go online to register your vehicle on MYGFU, under “GFU Resources,” click on “Vehicle Registration.” There will be no cost shown, and you will enter your vehicle information.

Complete instructions on vehicle registration can be found on Campus Public Safety’s website. Once you have completed the vehicle registration process, your permit will be mailed to you in 14 to 21 days at the mailing address you provided during the vehicle registration process.

For those who live nearby and would rather walk or ride a bike to campus, an online form will be available to request a refund for the permit charge. Please read the form thoroughly to understand the conditions of your refund. Information on where to access this form will be announced in an upcoming Daily Bruin.

Those of you living in the Good Neighbor area, when you bring in the required proof of residence to receive your free parking permit, your information will be submitted to Student Financial Services for a refund of permit charges. Details about parking off-campus can be found on the Off-Campus Parking website.

Please watch this summer for any changes regarding parking policies or permits. Check your George Fox email regularly or you might miss something important.

If you have any questions, please call Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090. Details about the university’s parking policies can be found on the Campus Public Safety website: Parking 101.
