Romaine lettuce recall info

Monday, January 8th, 2018

As you may have heard on the national news over the weekend, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration are currently investigating a U.S. foodborne outbreak of pathogenic E. coli that has been implicated with romaine lettuce, although the specific supply source has not yet been determined.

In the U.S. there have been 17 confirmed cases of E. coli infection across 13 states, with numerous hospitalizations and two deaths associated with the consumption of romaine lettuce.

As a precautionary measure and due to safety concerns, Bon Appetit has temporarily stopped serving romaine lettuce throughout the George Fox campus. Thank you for your understanding, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Consider leading a Life Group this spring

Sunday, January 7th, 2018

The Office for Spiritual and Intercultural Life is looking for post-college Life Group leaders for our six-week spring Life Groups (running the week of Feb. 12 through the week of March 20). Life Groups are small groups of undergraduate students who meet together for prayer, Bible study and fellowship.

Groups meet weekly for 60 to 90 minutes at the time and location of your choosing. Participants will select the group they wish to participate in based on the details that leaders provide. Groups are encouraged to use one of three curriculum options recommended by the Office for Spiritual and Intercultural Life that parallel other themes that are being explored in chapel.

We welcome our employees, alumni, family members of George Fox employees and students, and members of our wonderful local churches to consider leading a group. Our spring leader meeting will take place on Thursday, Jan. 25, from noon to 1:30 p.m., and lunch will be provided.

Auxiliary hosts special luncheons this semester

Sunday, January 7th, 2018

The George Fox Auxiliary invites the university community to a series of luncheons in the coming months featuring the theme “George Fox Alumni Serving in the World.” Each session will feature a special speaker who relates to the topic, with meetings set to be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Canyon Commons dining hall.

The series, which began in the fall, continues this Friday, Jan. 12, when guest Lon Fendall, an associate professor emeritus of history and political science, will discuss Mark Hatfield and his work in politics. Fendall formerly worked as an assistant to Hatfield, a two-term Oregon governor and a U.S. senator for 30 years who, after retiring from politics, taught classes at George Fox from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s.

Later this spring, on Friday, March 2, the auxiliary will host Jon and Marita Bishop, two 1967 George Fox graduates who have spent 40 years doing medial missions work all over the world. They are currently training family practice physicians in Afghanistan.

Finally, on Wednesday, May 2, professional musician Wendy Clark Goodwin, a 2000 George Fox alumna, will speak about her experiences.

The cost to attend is $10 per person, and payment may be made at the door. Reservations are preferred and can by arranged by calling Judy Woolsey at 971-832-1505.

Visit the FoxTALE for Faculty webpage for guides and resources and to learn more about the new features added.

Use your new, empty Spring 2018 sites as the sites in which you will teach. You may import content from another course site. See the instructions here for importing.

You may need to add sections to your course home page. This video shows you how: Manage Course Sections.

Your Spring 2018 sites are hidden to students. When you are ready to make a site available, from the course home page:

  • Go to Administration> Course administration > Edit settings
  • Scroll down to the “Visible” section and change “Hide” to “Show”
  • Just below the Visible setting is the Course start date where you can make changes if needed.
  • “Save changes” at the bottom

Remember that all students enrolled in your class in MyGFU will automatically be enrolled in your FoxTALE course site. As students add and drop your course in MyGFU, they will be added or removed automatically from your FoxTALE site.

Metacourses may be used in special cases where you want to use one FoxTALE site for multiple sections of the same class. If you would like to use a metacourse, contact the Service Desk for assistance with setting them up.

Local company seeks students to test new app

Sunday, January 7th, 2018

Students have the opportunity to help a local new company, GiftDrop, test its new app in Newberg and surrounding areas. GiftDrop COO Robert Johnson recently visited campus to explain the app and how students would help test it. A number of George Fox students from a couple of departments are already involved, and you are invited to join.

Following is the invitation letter from Johnson …

George Fox Students:

We want you to help us with our initial test launch of a new app. Our first launch is by invitation only, as we are inviting only students of George Fox to be the initial testers. GiftDrop is a company in Beaverton that is finalizing a fun new app and website. As we are still in stealth mode, there are limited details available about the app. We can say that it should be a lot of fun to use.

We are collecting emails from those interested in participating in the test. To verify that you are a student at George Fox, please send emails from your .edu account. In the near future, we will use email to provide more details for those who want to participate in the test.

We encourage sharing this information with other students at George Fox so they can share in the fun and we can have a robust test. To let us know of your interest, please send an email to: invitationonly@giftdrop.com with “Test” in the subject line. Please include your name in the body of the email.

We will not share your email information with anyone outside of GiftDrop. We look forward to the test. Stay tuned …
Robert Johnson, COO
