The team recently visited the Oregon State Penitentiary to engage in an outreach debate tournament. The inmates have organized their own chapter of Toastmasters to provide an opportunity to improve their communication and conflict resolution skills. For the past seven years, they have invited college teams to compete in a tournament in which the inmates are participants, timekeepers, judges and audience members.

Among the topics discussed this year were the possibility of successfully avoiding war with North Korea, the merit of removing all American troops from Afghanistan, the pros and cons of sanctuary city policies, and the reasons for repealing both the death penalty and life without parole.

This year, George Fox’s Kati Viscaino and Skyler Younger nearly made it into the final round.
