Expert on ending sexual violence visits Portland Center Wednesday

John Foubert, a professor of higher education and student affairs administration at Oklahoma State University, will be at the Portland Center on Wednesday, Oct. 5, speaking on the important topic of ending sexual violence. Please join the presentation from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. in Portland Center 155.

Foubert has written several books and articles on these topics and is a sought-after speaker and consultant to colleges across the nation and the military. He makes frequent appearances on CNN and NPR, and is cited regularly in news outlets like the Huffington Post, The New York Times and U.S. News & World Report. He has testified before Congress and briefed the White House and the Pentagon about how to end sexual violence.

Foubert, a professor of higher education and student affairs administration at Oklahoma State University, will be on the Newberg campus and Portland Center on Tuesday, Oct. 4, and Wednesday, Oct. 5, speaking on these important topics. Following are sessions for faculty, staff and administrators.

Interested in studying business abroad?

If you are a global business major, an accounting major or anyone else interested in the opportunity to study business in international settings, come to an International Business Institute (IBI) info meeting from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Hoover 102.

IBI is designed with business in mind for a unique study abroad experience. The 10-week program incorporates the international dimensions of business and culture by integrating academic study with international field experience. It includes periods of residence in key locations as well as coordinated visits and presentations in the major political and economic centers of Russia, The European Union, India and China.

Though the meeting begins at 4:30 p.m., stop by anytime during the session to learn about these exciting opportunities that build skills and competency in global business and cultural awareness – a critical need for today’s business careers.

Sculptor and printmaker speaks at Art Talk tonight

Join us tonight (Monday) for an Art Talk lecture featuring Althea Murphy Price, a sculptor and printmaker. She received her Master of Arts in printmaking and painting from Purdue University and a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia.

She has presented her work internationally, sharing her unique method of using synthetic hair as her medium to sculpt and make prints that comment on a personal and cultural history of hair.

Don’t miss out on hearing from Althea tonight at 6 p.m. at the Chehalem Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St.).

Run from zombies in PT’s ‘Running Dead’ race Oct. 29

Doctor of physical therapy students are hosting a hair-raising “The Running Dead” 5K walk/run on Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Chased by zombies through a forested trail, runners will attempt to beat the odds of survival. Costumes of all kinds (not just zombies) are encouraged, and a prize will be awarded for best costume.

Know of students who struggle with test-taking skills? Encourage them to come to an ARC-sponsored workshop, “How to Get A’s on All Your Tests (or at Least Become a Better Test Taker),” this Thursday, Oct. 6, from 10:50 to 11:40 a.m. in Hoover 105.

Volunteers needed for Foster Parents’ Night Out

Want to do something tangible for local foster parents? Embrace Ministries, an outreach ministry of George Fox that helps show hospitality to those in the foster care system, is hosting Foster Parents’ Night Out, a monthly event where we provide a fun and safe place for children in foster care to hang out so their parents can have a night out.

Portland police officer speaks on ‘Transcending Exile’ tonight

Join us for the sixth Liberal Arts and Critical Issues presentation of the semester tonight (Monday), when Natasha Haunsperger, an officer in the Portland Police Department, speaks on the topic “Transcending Exile” in Hoover 105. The same presentation will be made from 5 to 6 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Haunsperger will speak about the Portland police work to holistically engage with Muslim refugee and immigrant communities while assisting with the navigation of the criminal justice system.
