HR reports Oregon tax withholding problem on May 31 pay

No Oregon taxes were withheld on our May 31 payroll on the earnings of about 80 percent of our employees. HR and IT are working with Oracle/PeopleSoft to determine the cause of this problem, but it is not yet known. We do know that Oregon provided updated tax tables to employers and vendors of payroll systems in early May, so we believe it may be related to these new tables.

HR will send an e-mail to employees once more is understood, but in the meantime employees are encouraged to check their pay statements to see if Oregon taxes were withheld. If there was no Oregon withholding, it is advisable to check your April 30 pay statement to see how much was withheld to determine how much greater your net pay is than it would be if Oregon taxes had been withheld correctly.

The current plan is to double up on Oregon withholding on the June 30 pay day for those affected. This means the amount “extra” employees received on May 31 will be offset by their pay being “short” the same amount on June 30. Bottom line: We recommend that you set aside/don’t spend any extra you received this month to ensure that your monthly income in June will be what it normally would be had this issue not arisen.

You can access your pay statement online through mygfu.georgefox.edu. Just click on Self Service, then Payroll and Compensation, then View Paycheck. This will display a list of all pay checks since October 2010, and you can click on the check date for each of the statements you wish to view and compare.
