Comings and Goings
The School of Education hired Ken Badley as an associate professor in the Educational Foundations and Leadership department. He worked most recently for Elk Island Public Schools in Sherwood Park, Alberta, where he was a secondary teacher from 1997 to 2006. He was also an adjunct instructor for Seattle Pacific University this past year. He earned a doctorate in curriculum and philosophy of education from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C., in 1986. Ken lives in Tacoma with wife K. Jo-Ann Badley. They have two daughters, Jocelyn and Kristen, and attend Urban Grace in Tacoma.
Health and Human Performance hired Bethany Goldman as an athletic training education program director and clinical coordinator. She has been teaching health courses as an adjunct professor at Vanguard University for the past three years while also serving as an assistant athletic trainer at that school. She earned a master’s degree from Arizona School of Health Sciences in 2003 and a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Vanguard in 2001. She lives in Tualatin.
Marisabel Gouverneur will be an assistant professor in the nursing department. She arrives from Johns Hopkins University, where she was an international midwife advisor for the last five years. Prior to that, Marisabel practiced midwifery and nursing in various Atlanta hospitals and delivered full scope OB/GYN care in private practice. Marisabel earned master’s degrees in nursing and public health from Emory University. She became a certified nurse midwife at the Universidad de Puerto Rico. She has three grown children: Cybele, Tomás, and BenJoaquÃn. Marisabel recently returned from a two-year project in Indonesia and is attending Albany Mennonite Church in Albany.
Don Hoskisson will move from adjunct status to be a visiting professor of art in ceramics in the visual arts department. He was a professor of art at Western Oregon University from 1971 to 2004 and has participated in numerous exhibitions nationwide since the late 1960s. He has also been a juror, consultant, and advisor for other artists the past 25 years. Don earned an MFA in ceramics from Arizona State University in 1971 and a master’s degree in art from Utah State University in 1963. He lives in Dallas with his wife, Cindy, and two daughters, Brittney and Mya.
Helen Morse will work in the Lemmons Center as an administrative assistant for the English Language Institute and Family and Consumer Sciences. For the past three years, she has worked at The Sage Restaurant in McMinnville. Before that, she worked for the World Relief organization as an employment specialist, receptionist, and citizenship teacher in Kennewick, Wash. Helen earned a bachelor’s degree in linguistics from the University of Oregon in 1986. She lives in McMinnville with husband Ken, a recent George Fox Evangelical Seminary graduate, and daughters Erin and Annika. They attend First Presbyterian Church in McMinnville, where Ken serves as mission development director and youth director.
Polly Peterson, an adjunct professor in the writing/literature department since 2002, was hired as an assistant professor. In addition to teaching at George Fox, she has taught in the university’s Educational Foundations and Leadership program and in public schools in Newberg and St. Paul. Polly earned a master’s degree in curriculum and development from George Fox in 2006 and a bachelor’s degree in social studies from the university in 1989. She lives in Dundee with husband Brent, daughter Maggie, and son Bailey. She attends Newberg Friends Church.
Tim Rahschulte joins the School of Management as an assistant professor of business. Since 1999, he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at Thomas More College and the University of Phoenix. He has also been a guest lecturer at Portland State University the past three years. Tim earned a doctorate in organizational leadership from Regent University in 2007 and an MBA from Thomas More College in 1998. He lives in West Linn with his wife, Doris, and attends the Church of the Resurrection.
The Communications and Writing/ Literature departments hired Valerie Rogers to work as an administrative assistant. In addition to many years of volunteering for numerous organizations (including George Fox), she has been employed at Nick’s Italian Cafe in McMinnville since 1999. Valerie earned a bachelor’s degree in communication arts from George Fox in 2006. Her family includes her husband of 17 years, Michael, and teenage children Madison and Ukaia. She lives in McMinnville and attends Sunrise Church.
Jane Scott joins the Murdock Learning Resource Center as a public services librarian. She has more than 10 years of librarian experience, most recently working as a reference and instruction librarian at Mt. Hood Community College the past three years. She also worked part time at Portland Community College and Tigard Public Library. She earned a master’s degree in library science from Emporia State University in 2004. She lives in Beaverton with her husband Bill and their four children: Bill Jr., Meagan, Chris, and Sara. They attend Sunset Presbyterian Church.
The School of Management hired Seth Sikkema as an assistant professor of management to teach undergraduate accounting. Seth has several years of public accounting and external financial reporting experience, working with such entities as Idaho Power Company, Albertson’s, and Arthur Andersen. He also served as finance director for The River Church Community. He earned an MBA from Boise State University in 2007 and bachelor’s degrees in accounting and Spanish from George Fox in 1999. He lives in Newberg with wife Jill and two children, Ezekiel and Elizabeth.
Lauri Smith joins the Family and Consumer Sciences Department to teach interior design as an associate professor. Since 1985, she has owned and operated Expressive Design, an interior design business. Also, for the past four years she has served as owner and designer for Furnitures Direct, a custom-design upholstered furniture business. She will complete a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Woodbury University in Burbank, Calif., in September. She earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics education from George Fox in 1983. Lauri and husband Brent have two daughters, Lacey and Annie, who attend George Fox. Brent and Lauri are also youth directors in their home church.
Bruce Strom joins the School of Professional Studies as an associate professor of organizational leadership at the Boise Center. He comes from the Park University Ft. Bliss Campus in El Paso, Texas, where he was an associate professor of management this past year. Before that, he was an assistant professor of business in the University of Indianapolis’ School of Business for five years. He has also done extensive adjunct work for universities domestically and internationally the past seven years. Bruce earned a doctorate in administrative science from the Universidad Empresarial de Costa Rica in 2003. He lives in Boise with wife Laurie and is a member of the Christian Churches (Independent).
The nursing department welcomes Jacqui Cooke as an assistant professor of nursing. Jacqui graduated from Oregon Health & Science University with a master’s in science as a family nurse practitioner in 2003 and a post master’s as a certified nurse midwife in 2004. Most recently, she’s been an independent contractor for health departments in Yamhill, Marion, and Tillamook counties. She also volunteers at her church and at the Salem Free Medical Clinic. Jacqui graduated from OHSU with a bachelor’s of science in nursing in 2000 and worked as an RN at Providence Newberg Hospital from 2000to 2004. She lives in Amity with her husband, Shawn. She attends Northwest Community Church in McMinnville.
Kathleen Weiss joins Biology/Chemistry as an assistant professor. This marks a return for Kathleen, who worked in the university’s health and counseling center from 1998 to 2003. She also worked as an adjunct professor at the university from 2004 to 2007. Previously, she practiced internal medicine in Newberg. Kathleen earned a doctorate in medicine from the University of Southern California’s School of Medicine in 1978. She lives in Newberg with husband Fred and has two college-age children, Ben and Christina. She attends Woodhaven Community Church in Sherwood.
