University community invited to ‘Great Turkey’ event on Thanksgiving Day

A George Fox alumnus invites the university community to join in the Great Turkey Fumble 5K/1K run this year on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 23. This event is a benefit for Newberg FISH. Last year, the event raised more than $1,900 and 250 pounds of nonperishable food for Newberg FISH.

  • Date: Thursday, Nov. 23
  • Location: Newberg High School’s football field
  • Time: 8:45 a.m.
  • Cost: $26; $15 (under age 10)
  • All entries receive a free football and T-shirt!

Honors program director Joseph Clair gives public lecture

Portland Writing Center is hiring

The Portland Writing Center is seeking a new writing consultant who is enthusiastic about helping fellow graduate and adult degree students understand the components of effective writing. Portland Writing Center consultants are current adult degree-completion and graduate students who work 4 to 8 hours per week meeting with students in face-to-face or online sessions at the Portland Writing Center.

Writing consultant duties include helping students with the following: (1) thinking through ideas for a writing assignment; (2) considering writing choices with regard to audience, focus, purpose, cohesion, and organization; (3) developing ideas with specific evidence; (4) improving research strategies; (5) applying proper documentation and formatting; and (6) understanding basic grammar and mechanics.

The music department invites the campus community to “An Evening of Jazz” concert tomorrow (Saturday) at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. The concert will feature jazz trumpeter Clay Jenkins, who will perform with the George Fox University Jazz Ensemble and Faculty Trio.

Clay is an associate professor of music at the Eastman School of Music. He has performed and recorded albums with the bigs bands of Stan Kenton, Harry James, Buddy Rich, Count Basie and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, as well as countless other jazz luminaries.

George Fox students and employees are entitled to one free ticket available with a current university ID presented at the door. Additional tickets are available for purchase at georgefox.edu/concerts.

PT professor shares on topic of motor control Nov. 16

The School of Physical Therapy is excited to host a special presentation by Associate Professor Andrew Meszaros, PT, PhD, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in Canyon Commons 101 & 102.

Dr. Meszaros will present the topic “Motor Control Update for the Orthopaedically Minded,” which will provide a succinct modern update of select broad concepts in motor control. Topics will include: effects of motivational influences and autonomy on motor learning; senses of effort and force; movement as a self-organizing and emergent property; “good” versus “bad” variability in movement; antifragility; multifractality; the role of reflexes in voluntary movement; and a survey of misconceptions in sensory processing and therapeutic exercise.

Light refreshments will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m., and the presentation will start at 6 p.m. All are welcome to attend this free event. FoxTALE upgrade scheduled for December

In an effort to increase overall security and stability of FoxTALE, we will introduce a late December upgrade to our maintenance schedule which currently includes our August upgrade and bi-monthly updates.​ ​A December upgrade will bring our security to the highest level and resolve issues. In addition, December upgrades will make the introduction of new features a bit more incremental. Our December 2017 upgrade is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 28 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The physical therapy department is looking for volunteers to participate in a lab session on the lower extremities. If you have a problem with your hip, knee, ankle or foot, our lab is the place to be! Our doctor of physical therapy second-year students, along with faculty members, will be performing examinations and giving you direction on how to take care of your condition. Volunteers are needed for either a one- or two-hour session from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at the Roberts Center.
