University closes this Monday to observe Memorial Day

All university offices in Newberg and at regional sites will be closed this Monday, May 29, to observe the Memorial Day holiday. The libraries in Newberg and the Portland Center will also be closed, although the 24-hour space in the Murdock Library will remain open.

Have you heard about this summer’s Fox Film Camp? If you know a high school student who loves filmmaking, they’re not going to want to miss out on this opportunity! Campers will spend a week making their own short film that will premiere at the Friday showcase.

Fox Film Camp is designed for incoming sophomores, juniors and seniors, and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily the week of June 26-30 on the George Fox campus in Newberg.

Join Paul Anderson for free ‘Following Jesus’ course that begins tonight

All are invited to join us for a “Following Jesus” short course, taught by Paul Anderson, covering the heart of Christian discipleship from a Quaker perspective. Sessions will be held in person from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Friendsview Retirement Community and also be accessible on Zoom (passcode: FJSC).

Here is the schedule:

  • May 23: My Story and Following Jesus Together
  • May 30: Evangelism & Convincement and Transforming Worship
  • June 6: Ministry & Service and Sacraments & Sacramental Living
  • June 20: Blessed are the Peacemakers and Testifying to the Truth

The course is offered free of charge to all who are interested; we recommend participants purchase their own copies of Following Jesus: The Heart of Faith and Practice, as the course will cover the content of two book chapters per session.

The Portland Writing Center is open for appointments for all students this summer

The Portland Writing Center (PWC) is switching scheduling software from Penji to TracCloud. To make an appointment with the PWC, please go to traccloud.georgefox.edu.

All George Fox graduate and undergraduate students may schedule remote writing or academic coaching appointments with the PWC throughout the summer. Live Zoom consultations are preferred, though alternatives can be discussed if consultant availability doesn’t align with a student’s schedule.

Join a Wilderness First Responder course in August

University Recreation is hosting a Wilderness First Responder course this August on the Newberg campus.

The course is ideal for anyone who spends a significant amount of time recreating in outdoor settings. The curriculum also provides essential training in wilderness medicine, leadership, and critical thinking for professionals and leaders working and traveling in outdoor, low-resource, and remote environments.

We have four spots remaining in this course, and they may go quickly!

The university community is invited to the Interprofessional Primary Care Institute’s “Focused Acceptance & Commitment Therapy” event May 9-11.

Both in-person and Zoom sessions will be hosted, with Tuesday’s event taking place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and both Wednesday’s and Thursday’s meetings from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sessions will feature Dr. Patricia Robinson and Dr. Kirk Strosahl, founders of Focused Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and internationally renowned psychologists.

This CME is an excellent cross-training opportunity in behavioral theory and practice for the medical, dental, pharmacy and nursing professions.

Guitarist Doyle Dykes hosts free clinic and concert tomorrow

We are privileged to welcome guitarist Doyle Dykes in concert at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday) in Wood-Mar Auditorium.

Dykes is arguably the most gifted fingerstyle guitarist alive today, and he has dedicated himself and his gifts to the Lord, blending Scripture and inspirational stories into his playing. You won’t want to miss this rare opportunity to spend an evening with him.

We’re looking for former missionaries for a study on their experience

We are recruiting former missionaries who have started a business after returning from the mission field as interviewees for a study on the role of entrepreneurship in re-entry adjustment.

The interviews will take place by Zoom (or in person, if local) in the month of May, and run about 20 to 30 minutes. We believe participants may also benefit from sharing their stories.
