Payday is on Tuesday, May 15

Paychecks will be mailed to the most recent address on file with Mail Services, UNLESS you are working on campus this summer and have an open campus box. In that case, your check will go there instead.

Thanks for your help in getting your time sheets to HR on time. And thank you, too, for your work and contribution to the department/s in which you have worked this academic year. We hope you have a fabulous summer.

If you are working on campus this summer, please plan to attend a summer orientation on Monday, April 30, at 9 a.m. in Hoover 105.  This required meeting will provide important information you will need as a summer employee.

Two commencement ceremonies planned on Newberg campus this Saturday

The university will host two commencement ceremonies this Saturday, April 28. This year, the ceremony for graduate, seminary and adult degree programs is scheduled for 10 a.m., while the undergraduate ceremony is set for 3 p.m. Both will take place in Miller Gymnasium in the Wheeler Sports Center. A live streaming of the undergraduate ceremony will be shown in Bauman Auditorium.

Angela Bymaster, a 2000 alumna of George Fox who become an MD and now works for the Santa Clara County Homeless Healthcare Program, will speak to the undergraduates. Jeanette Eggert, an associate professor of math and physics at Concordia University in Portland, Ore., will address the graduate, seminary and adult degree program students. Audience seating begins an hour before each ceremony.

Commencement can be viewed live at this link 15 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony.

Is there someone at George Fox who has made a difference in your academic career? Someone who ignited a spark to make you want to learn or attend class or who has acted as a role model? Take a moment to write an e-mail, e-card, or traditional “thank you” card to that professor (or other person). Try to be specific as you describe how this person has contributed to your life.

Newberg students can stop by the SUB to pick up a blank card. Of course, one can make or buy one’s own card.

Security services offers C-CERT training in May

Security services is striving to provide you with the opportunity to get involved by joining our Campus Community Emergency Response Team (C-CERT). We will be hosting training daily from 8 a.m. to noon the week of May 7-12 in EHS 125.

Volunteers will be the first on-the-scene emergency responders to an event that happens on campus, especially when firefighters, police and public safety are overwhelmed with requests for help and could be slowed down by impassable streets and other damage.

In a large-scale disaster, George Fox needs to be prepared to be self-sufficient, too. This is why we are providing this training. Become part of the team and be prepared.

Finance and accounting firm rep visits Newberg campus Friday

Kforce, a finance and accounting staffing firm, will be on the Newberg campus to speak with interested students this Friday, April 20. Talent Associate Chrissy Blundon is seeking to fill the following entry-level and experienced positions for local employers:

  • Entry-level financial analyst (potential contract with Nike)
  • Senior divisional accountant
  • Tax manager
  • Senior audit
  • Business analyst
  • Sales tax analyst

No appointment is necessary. Drop by Career Services on the first floor of Stevens between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to visit with Chrissy on a first-come, first-served basis. Graduating seniors and alumni are both welcome.

Check out engineering projects at Friday’s expo in EHS

The university’s engineering department will present its annual Engineering Expo this Friday, April 20, between 3 and 6 p.m. in the EHS Atrium on the Newberg campus.

The expo will include project displays, a robotics competition and lab demonstrations. Also featured will be projects from the program’s Senior Design and Servant Engineering teams. In addition, high school design projects will be featured. Refreshments will be provided. All are welcome!

Store closes for remodeling April 14-23

The Bruin Store will begin a remodel project this weekend. We will reopen on Monday, April 23, with a new store, a new name (“The BlueZone Store”), and brand new product! During the remodel, the textbook annex will be open for textbook purchases and final project needs.

Expert on negotiating speaks at School of Business event April 20

Jim Cross, a purchasing manager at Intel Corporation in Hillsboro, Ore., will speak on “Negotiations 101: How to Drive an Effective ‘Win-Win’ Deal” at the School of Business’ next speaker series event, scheduled from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Friday, April 20, at the Portland Center.

Jim will discuss the structure, strategy, tactics, techniques and tools to effectively negotiate. He has designed and taught negotiation classes for sales teams and regularly teaches supply chain courses at local universities. You can learn more about Jim here.

University closes April 6 to observe Good Friday

The university’s offices and libraries will be closed on Friday, April 6, to observe Good Friday. The Newberg library will be closed Friday and Sunday but will be open between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Portland Center library will be closed Friday through Sunday.

Run for Romania on April 22 benefits June Serve team

Sign up today for Run for Romania! Run for Romania will be held at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 22, at the Newberg campus track. It is a 5K walk that will benefit the June Serve team’s trip to Romania and Moldova this summer.

In this year’s June Serve, a group of George Fox students and faculty that will partner with the organization Word Made Flesh, which seeks to serve Jesus amongst the poorest of the poor in Romania and Moldova.

Registration is $30 for adults and $15 for children (12 and under). To register, go to this link.

Engineering Expo returns to Newberg campus April 20

The university’s engineering department will present its annual Engineering Expo on Friday, April 20, between 3 and 6 p.m. in the EHS Atrium on the Newberg campus.

The expo will include project displays, a robotics competition and lab demonstrations. Also featured will be projects from the program’s Senior Design and Servant Engineering teams for companies and community organizations such as Daimler, CUI, VibeTech, NASA, 219 Technologies, Providence, Engineering World Health, 5-Rock Ranch, Medical Teams International, Oregon Commission for the Blind, Mennonite Central Committee, Aprovecho, and the Newberg Rotary.

In addition, high school design projects will be featured. Refreshments will be provided. All are welcome!
