Seminary hosts Kimball, Dawn for seminar Feb. 9

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

How can art forms function as theological media, conveying spiritual realities in ways words cannot? The question will be the topic of a George Fox Evangelical Seminary seminar on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at the Portland Center.

Author Dan Kimball and author and theologian Maggi Dawn will speak at the event, the latest installment of the seminary’s Ministry in Contemporary Culture Seminar series. The half-day event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon in Room 155.

The seminar, entitled “A New Creation: The Fusion of Ministry and Creative Arts,” will address the ways in which Christ-followers have used media throughout the ages and present some new ways these media can be used today. Kimball is the author of several books on church leadership and culture, including They Like Jesus, But Not The Church and The Emerging Church. He is also on staff at Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Dawn is based at the University of Cambridge, where she is chaplain and Fellow in Theology at Robinson College. She recently published a book, The Writing on the Wall, which explores some of the most influential stories and ideas from the Bible and the ways they have been woven into Western culture.

Online registration is available at seminary.georgefox.edu and can be found by clicking the “News and Events” link on the left side of the screen. More information about the seminar is available by contacting Jean Oehm Miller at ext. 6150.

Support the homeless with gently used clothes

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Because it is wet and cold outside, those without homes put on layers of clothes to try and keep warm. The GFU Portland Center has agreed to be a collection site for jeans, socks, sweats, and coats to support local organizations who distribute these to the homeless in Tigard.

During the next two weeks a tent will be in the main lobby. The tent is to resemble where many of the homeless live throughout Tigard. Please bring clothing items you are no longer using, and drop them into the tent.

If you have questions or would like to know more about the effort to meet the needs of the homeless in Tigard, contact Darla Samuelson by email.

Kaleo returns to campus Feb. 26; volunteers needed

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

If you’re like most youth mentors, close to half of your graduating seniors pick up their diplomas and ditch their faith. Why is that? For those graduates who remain connected to Jesus, what is it that makes the difference? And how can we be made aware of the ways we may be subtly sabotaging our students’ faith, despite our best intentions?

Kaleo 2011, scheduled on the Newberg campus Saturday, Feb. 26, will take a deep look at ongoing research conducted by the Fuller Youth Institute on students just like yours. Kara Powell and Jon Furman will provide practical ways to keep students of all ages and grades engaged in your ministry, and more importantly their faith, so that they build faith that sticks.

To learn more about the speakers, schedule, cost or registration information, visit kaleo.georgefox.edu.

Volunteer to help throughout the day and receive a discount on your registration fee and a free Kaleo T-shirt! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Amy Lorenz at alorenz@georgefox.edu or ext. 2134.
