All are invited to ‘Saint John’s Bible’ sessions this spring

Sunday, January 11th, 2015

The university community is invited to a series of guest lectures, faculty presentations and weekly “Turning of the Page” sessions about the historic Saint John’s Bible. The “Spring into Illumination: Seeing the Word Through The Saint John’s Bible” events begin on Tuesday, Jan. 27, and run through mid-April.

The Saint John’s Bible is the first completely handwritten and illuminated Bible to have been commissioned by a Benedictine Abbey (Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn.) since the invention of the printing press. The Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible is the full-size fine art reproduction of the original. Measuring two feet tall by three feet wide when open, it is the exact size of the original manuscript.

Following is a schedule of guest lectures and faculty presentations:

Tuesday, Jan. 27
“The Artist as Preacher – Illumination in The Saint John’s Bible”
Eric Hollas, OSB, senior associate for Arts & Cultural Affairs at Saint John’s University
Hoover 105, 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Feb. 18
“Light from the Hebrew Scriptures”
Howard Macy and Mark Terry, George Fox University faculty presentations
Hoover 105, 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Thursday, March 5
“The Vision and Making of The Saint John’s Bible”
Bill Cahoy, dean of the Saint John’s Theological Seminary
Hoover 105, 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Monday, April 13
“Light from the New Covenant”
Paul Anderson and Karen Bowdoin, George Fox University faculty presentations
Hoover 105, 7:30-9:30 p.m.

The Turning of the Page: Leafing through the Saint John’s Bible
Every Friday afternoon between Jan. 16 and April 24 all are invited to come browse through the pages of the Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible – Vol. 6, The Gospels and Acts, and hear Paul Anderson, professor of biblical and Quaker studies, share about the meaning and significance of the text and artwork on display the following week. Sessions will be in the Murdock Learning Resource Center from 4 to 5 p.m.

Questions? Visit this page or contact Anderson at panderso@georgefox.edu.

Info on formal way to register complaints

Sunday, January 11th, 2015

While most student concerns and complaints can and should be resolved informally, there is a formal general complaint procedure described in the “Support for Students” section of the Undergraduate Student Handbook as well as on the Graduate/DPS Policies page of the website.

Please note that these procedures cover complaints of a general nature and do not supersede specific policies involving special cases such as grade appeals, sexual harassment, etc., which are covered elsewhere in the Student Handbook, Catalog or Graduate/DPS Policies.

W-2 Forms now paperless: Have you consented?

Thursday, January 8th, 2015

W-2 Forms are now paperless: Have you consented?

2014 year-end W-2 Forms will be issued by Friday, Jan. 30, online in “Self Service” for all employees, including student employees. If you would like to receive this form online, the law requires that you give your consent. Those who do not give consent will still receive a paper W-2. If you consented in the past, you do NOT need to do so again.

You can verify your consent status or give consent for the first time by following the steps below. It only takes about 30 seconds, so I encourage you to take care of it as soon as possible — perhaps right now? Here’s how:

  1. Log in to mygfu.georgefox.edu
  2. From the menu at left, select “Self Service”
  3. Select “Payroll and Compensation”
  4. Select “W-2/W-2c Consent”
  5. Check your current status. Does it say “Consent Received?” If so, thank you! You’re done. If it does not say “Consent Received” …
  6. Read the statement and check the box to give consent
  7. Enter your GFU password as a confirmation of your identity and click “Continue”
  8. Click “OK”

You’ll receive a confirmation email of your decision shortly after completing this process. And just to be clear, you will only have to do this once — not every year.

Thanks very much. Let me know if you have any questions.

New library system in place starting tomorrow

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

Tomorrow (Thursday, Dec. 18), George Fox University libraries will transition to a new library system. We are in the fourth and final group as the 37-member Orbis Cascade Alliance transitions from stand-alone library systems to one shared library system.

The new system will improve the research experience for our students and faculty and allow us to better manage our resources. However, please be aware that there will be some bumps along the way as we make this migration. As one example, Summit Borrowing will be routed through interlibrary loan (a slower process) until Jan. 20. More information can be found at this link.
