When we think about lifestyle wellbeing, we usually think of balance within physical and mental health. However, it can be difficult to find that balance, and understand where to focus our efforts.

In a free webinar offered through Canopy, we will discuss different areas of health where wellness habits can be formed, including brain health, constructive breathing, mindfulness, and utilizing more of our physical potential.

Attendees will also be provided with a 15-minute and 60-minute morning wellness plan to help with getting started. The session will be presented from 11 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Feb. 15. You can register here.

Is peace possible in Israel/Palestine? It’s a question that will be discussed at the Center for Peace and Justice’s Woolman Peacemaking Forum featuring guest lecturer and panelist Jonathan Kuttab, a Christian Palestinian human rights attorney, peacemaker and educator.

Two events are scheduled as part of the forum. The first is a panel event set from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, in Hoover 105. The entire university community is invited to hear from those who have dedicated their lives to nonviolent activism in the pursuit of the mutual flourishing of all. The panel discussion topic will be “The Israel/Palestine Conflict and Prospects for Peace.”

Panelists will include Kuttab, executive director of Friends of Sabeel North America; Todd Deatherage, executive director and cofounder of The Telos Group and former chief of staff for the State Department; and Mark Braverman, executive director of Kairos USA and advisory board member for Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions USA.

That evening, Kuttab will present a lecture, “Is There a Balm in Gilead? Prospects for a Palestinian / Israeli Peace,” at 6 p.m. in Hoover 105. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A and reception. There is also a livestream link to the lecture here.

Chapel credit is available for evening lecture attendance.

Kuttab was the head of the legal committee negotiating the Cairo Agreement of 1994 between Israel and the PLO. He is co-founder of Nonviolence International as well as the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq. He serves on the board of Bethlehem Bible College and is president of the Board of Holy Land Trust.

Registration for Science Outreach Program youth science classes for K-12 children is open! We have an exciting lineup of classes this semester, with everything from bugs to weather to animals and ecology. There is even a special pre-healthcare class for older high schoolers!

Classes are taught by George Fox science and education students and will take place in the Edwards-Holman Science Center and the Roberts Center over six weeks, starting Monday, Feb. 19. The cost is $80 per class. Follow this link for more information and to register.

The Office of Student Life thought it would be helpful to provide information about what we can do at George Fox when concerns arise about a student’s behavior. While some of the information is more specific to traditional undergraduate students (due to the residential nature of these programs, etc.), some of the information applies to graduate and ADP students and programs as well.

In the past, we have delivered brightly colored folders with information for staff and faculty to use as a resource in situations where a student in crisis needs intervention. There is also information about employee responsibilities regarding FERPA as well as guidance in a campus emergency.

In order to reduce paper and make these materials accessible to you online, we have created a folder in Google Drive. Please bookmark this folder for quick reference.

The campus community is invited to a complimentary lunch with guest Dr. Michael Lamb on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

The lunch event, titled “What’s Hope Got to Do with It: Politics in a Time of Presumption and Despair,” runs from noon to 1:20 p.m. in Canyon Commons 103. During the session, our very own Dr. Joseph Clair will interview Lamb about his most recent book, A Commonwealth of Hope: Augustine’s Political Thought, which offers a novel interpretation of Augustine’s political thought and recovers his virtue of hope to inform contemporary politics. Lamb’s research focuses on the ethics of citizenship and the role of virtues in public life.

Guests are invited to go through the cafeteria line and join us for the talk, which will begin shortly after noon.

In addition, faculty are also invited and encouraged to join Lamb at 3 p.m. in Canyon Commons 103 that afternoon for a discussion, “Character Formation in the University: Ten Lessons from the Front Lines.”

Lamb is the F. M. Kirby Foundation Chair of Leadership and Character, executive director of the Program for Leadership and Character, and associate professor of interdisciplinary humanities at Wake Forest University. He is also an associate fellow of the Oxford Character Project.

He holds a PhD in politics from Princeton University, a BA in political science from Rhodes College, and a second BA in philosophy and theology from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar.

Chances are, your child’s heart is healthy. But a small percentage of young people have hidden heart defects that put their lives at risk – especially during physical exertion.

Since 2012, Providence’s Play Smart program has provided over 40,000 free heart screenings by checking a simple, painless cardiac test, an electrocardiogram. We have diagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, long QT syndrome, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, and many other conditions that can be treated or monitored.

To register for a free screening, offered between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. this Saturday, Feb. 10, visit this page. The screening is free for ages 12-18. It will be done at Providence’s Basecamp Prevention and Wellness facility at 9427 S.W. Barnes Road, in Portland.

Doctor of Physical Therapy students at the university are conducting a study, “A Biomechanical Analysis of the Floor Transfer in Community-Dwelling Older Adults,” overseen by principal investigators Lyndsay Stutzenberger and Tyler Whited. We are interested in how older adults get up from the floor.

To participate in our study, you must

• Be 50-80 years of age
• Live independently or in an assisted living facility
• Be able to walk independently at least 15 feet with or without an assistive device
• Take a cognitive test
• Be willing to attempt to get up from a chair and from the floor

In order to participate, you must NOT have a diagnosis of a neurological condition or a current illness or health issue that would make performing study activities unsafe.

If you are interested in participating in this study and meet the above criteria, you would come to the Medical Sciences Building on Werth Boulevard, where we would ask you to sign an informed consent form, answer questions on a questionnaire, perform a short cognitive test, and have your vitals (blood pressure and heart rate) taken. Depending on the results of these assessments, you may or may not be eligible for the study.

If you are eligible, you will be asked to participate in one testing session that takes up to approximately one hour. During testing sessions you will fill out questionnaires and be asked to attempt to stand up from a chair without using your arms and get up from the floor. You will not be paid for being in this study or reimbursed for any costs associated with traveling to/from the George Fox campus.

You are able to stop participation in the study at any time and for any reason. No information that would identify you will be made public, and we do not feel there is more than minimal risk associated with this study.

Credit report scores hold a lot of power. They can help buy that first home but can also take away financial opportunities.

In a free Canopy webinar session, Solving the Mystery of Credit Reports, we’ll provide an overview of credit bureaus, credit scoring, guidance to dispute inaccuracies, improving credit scores, and dealing with identity theft and fraud.

The session meets from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, or from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. You can register for either webinar here.

Portland Seminary would like to invite you to a book release party for Dr. Leah Payne’s new book, God Gave Rock & Roll to You: A History of Contemporary Christian Music (Oxford University Press, 2024).

The celebration will be at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, at Portland Seminary (Room 155). Tickets are free, but please RSVP for a headcount.

Due to continuing maintenance, the Department of Education has announced that schools will not receive applicant FAFSA data until the first half of March.

Our new and continuing students will be affected in several ways, the most immediate being that aid packages will be delayed. The financial aid department anticipates packaging student financial aid after FAFSAs are processed by the Department of Education, and we will provide more detailed timelines as we get closer to receiving FAFSA information.

High school seniors may be having difficulties selecting their school without all necessary financial information available to them, so it is all the more important that we live out our Be Known Promise with our applicants.

Additionally, while our continuing students can expect to receive the same institutional aid next year, their federal and state aid will be determined by their new FAFSA information. Applicants will also not be able to make corrections on their FAFSAs until they are processed.

The financial aid department will continue to keep students updated throughout the spring, and in the meantime, we are encouraging students to apply for institutional and external scholarships. If you have any questions, please reach out to us at finaid@georgefox.edu.

Offices and departments will be closed on Friday, Feb. 16, for the mid-semester holiday. Traditional undergraduate students also will be off Thursday, Feb. 15, as part of the holiday, and undergraduate faculty will be in a conference that day. University offices and departments will remain open on Thursday, Feb. 15. 

Some graduate programs and all ADP programs will continue to hold classes through the break. Consult with your department director if you have questions. 

In celebration of American Heart Month, Providence is offering a special event that brings together experts to discuss a variety of topics centered around women’s heart health and wellness.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among women in the U.S.; though 80% of heart disease can be prevented through lifestyle choices, some female life experiences and genetics play a key role in heart health long-term.

Join Providence Heart Institute experts as they share important points around hormones, genetics and pregnancy that can impact heart health. The session will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. this Tuesday, Feb. 6.

You’ll gain increased awareness for your general heart health, living with certain conditions or risk factors, as well as tools to help lower your risk through lifestyle behaviors and disease management.

After 22 years of service to George Fox, Janelle Freitag has decided to retire. For those of us who know Janelle, this is bittersweet. We are sad to see her go, yet excited for this next chapter in her life!

We are excited to host author Kaitlyn Schiess in chapel this Thursday, Feb. 1, at 10:50 a.m. in Bauman Auditorium. Her sermon will be based on her most recent book, The Ballot and the Bible: How Scripture Has Been Used and Abused in American Politics and Where We Go from Here.

All are welcome as we explore what it means to follow Christ in this upcoming election season.
