Richter Scholar proposals are due Oct. 23

Monday, August 28th, 2023

Richter Scholar proposals are due Monday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. The Richter Scholars program at George Fox distributes funds to support student research and/or projects that are devised, initiated, and carried out by individual students, with mentorship, guidance, and expertise provided by a faculty mentor.

The purpose of these funds is to support educational research/project opportunities that encourage the practices of independent thought leading to independent achievement and personal responsibility. For the purpose of this program, research/project is defined as a knowledge-generating activity that is designed to provide new information on a topic, tool, or process, and that proceeds according to established and accepted methods.

Before preparing a proposal, please read through the full proposal guidelines, eligibility requirements, and review criteria at this link. All submittals will be electronic.

For more information, contact Vetta Berokoff at vberokof@georgefox.edu.

Be aware of steps to take with extreme heat

Thursday, August 24th, 2023

As we head into Welcome Weekend, the Newberg/Portland area will see temperatures soar above 90 degrees. As per our heat protocol, please follow these steps:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking water every 20 minutes
  • Schedule more strenuous work in the cooler parts of the day such as the morning
  • If on the Newberg campus, take advantage of cooler buildings such as the Murdock Library, Klages, or Canyon Commons
  • Between the hours of 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., check on fellow employees every hour to two hours
  • Know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

If you have any questions about best practices during high heat, please contact Kim Knoernschild, our environmental health and safety specialist, at kknoernschild@georgefox.edu.

Speak Spanish? Wear a button to let our guests know

Monday, August 21st, 2023

One of the best things about George Fox is our welcoming spirit. In an effort to extend that gift to our Spanish-speaking community (families, guests and students), we are offering our campus community the opportunity to pick up a button that identifies you as someone who can help in their home language.

If you speak Spanish proficiently and would like to be a resource, we have a button for you! These buttons can/should be worn during large anchor events (Welcome Weekend, Family Weekend, prospective events, etc.) and then displayed on your desk for the rest of the year.

You can pick up these awesome buttons in the Barclay House (SpiL and Parent and Family Programs), beginning tomorrow (Wednesday), between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and after Welcome Weekend in Carlee Anglin’s office in the Meridian Street House.

Feel free to contact Megan Fisher at mfisher@georgefox.edu with any questions.

A resource for employees: Students in Distress Folder

Thursday, August 17th, 2023

The Office of Student Life thought it would be helpful to provide information about what we can do at George Fox University when concerns arise about a student’s behavior. While some of the information is more specific to traditional undergraduate students (due to the residential nature of these programs, etc.), some of the information applies to graduate and ADP students and programs as well.

In the past, we have delivered brightly colored folders with information for staff and faculty to use as a resource in situations where a student in crisis needs intervention. There is also information about employee responsibilities regarding FERPA as well as guidance in a campus emergency.

In order to reduce paper, as well as make these materials accessible to you online, we have created a folder in Google Drive. Please bookmark this folder for quick reference.

For more information, please contact Jere Witherspoon at jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2316.
