Information on Halloween costumes

Monday, October 28th, 2019

In order to promote a fun and positive environment around the Halloween and harvest party season, the student life office has a few tips on avoiding cultural appropriation in your costume choice:

  • Avoid clothing that belongs to the traditions of a people group other than your own.
  • Avoid anything that involves blackface, Native/Indigenous representation, etc.
  • Ask yourself: Why do I want to wear this costume? Could my costume be misunderstood if I don’t understand its origin or cultural context?
  • Not sure what cultural appropriation is? Stop by the Intercultural Resource Center (IRC) and ask Bryce or Jenny about it.

If you have any questions, please contact the student life office or the Intercultural Resource Center.
