Application for social work program is now open

Meeting the early application deadline has many benefits. It will reduce stress by cutting the time spent rushing to meet the late deadline. It will initiate the field placement process sooner and allow you to get to know social work faculty earlier on in the process.

If you are a social work sophomore or a social work freshman who is planning on going abroad, click here for more details and access to the application.

Information on nighttime campus safety

Monday, September 30th, 2019

While crimes can occur at all times of the day, nights add an extra degree of risk that requires added precautions. Use the following night safety tips to protect yourself when you are on campus.

Program Campus Public Safety’s phone number into your cell phone now, before you need it, so that you will have it in case of emergencies: 503.554.2090.

Call Campus Public Safety to escort or shuttle you to your car or dorm at night.

Always let someone know where you are going, your expected travel time, and how long you plan on being in that location.

If you know you will be out late, try to wear reflective or bright clothing to make yourself more visible to drivers and to help someone spot you faster in case of an emergency.

Carry yourself with confidence. Assailants target those that appear weak or distracted. Plan your travel route ahead of time before you leave. By knowing exactly where you are going, you will appear more confident and you will reduce your travel time, which lowers your chance of becoming a crime victim.

Invest in pepper spray and carry it with you at all times. Also add a small flashlight to your keychain to use in case of an emergency. Always have your keys in your hand to allow quick entry into your dorm or car.

Always walk with someone or a group of people that you trust to travel with at night. Walk in well-lit, highly visible areas. Stay in familiar areas and avoid shortcuts.

Never leave valuable items in your car in open view. Park in well-lit areas where it will be safe for you to return to at night. Always take note of where you park so that you can easily locate your car.

Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid the biggest distraction: using your cell phone while walking. Using electronics diminishes awareness, making you more vulnerable. Wear only one earbud while you walk, and keep your volume low. Before traveling, always be sure that your phone is charged so that you can easily contact Campus Public Safety if an emergency occurs.

Remember, it is your personal responsibility to do everything in your power to keep yourself safe. The George Fox University campus is a safe place for students, but you must still take the proper precautions to protect yourself.

Questions? Call the Campus Public Safety office at 503.554.2090. We have officers available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
