English department is launching new major

Friday, March 6th, 2020

The English department will launch its new major, which includes a writing concentration, in fall 2020.

The new writing concentration contains multiple elective courses, allowing students to focus on their particular interests, such as creative writing, technical/professional writing, or journalism; courses in advanced fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction writing; and the opportunity to gain real-world experience through an on- or off-campus internship.

The IDEA Center reports that effective writing skills are number one on the list of desired attributes for potential employees, so whether you hope to be the next J. K. Rowling or George R. R. Martin, or aim to write or edit for businesses or non-profits, consider an English major with a writing concentration.

There’s also a literature concentration for students who plan to teach or pursue graduate studies in English. To learn more, contact Gary Tandy, department chair, at gtandy@georgefox.edu.
