Reminder about campus drains

Sunday, October 10th, 2021

A Monday Maintenance Reminder: Please do not use drain cleaner in the university drains.

Plant Services offers drain cleaning as a service. Dumping drain cleaner in the drain does not clear the drain, and only results in splashing our technician with acid when they clear the drain. Instead, if you have a slow drain, contact your RA to place a work request for a technician to clear the drain of debris.

Food should never be dumped down sink or drinking fountain drains. You can put food in lined bags and remove immediately to the outside bin (food like oatmeal, bread or rice that swells when in contact with liquid), or you can flush more liquid-type food down toilets instead (food like leftover ramen or soup).

Report any issues to your RA instead of trying rogue DIY methods. Plant Services has the equipment and knowledge to keep your space functioning well. Thank you!

Questions? Contact Dixie Downey at ddowney@georgefox.edu.

Maker Hub’s ‘Tool Tip Friday’: Water Jet

Thursday, October 7th, 2021

Did you know that the Maker Hub has a water jet cutter? Our ProtoMax Waterjet Cutter is a machine that uses highly pressurized water with a flow of an abrasive material to perform computer-controlled cuts on a wide variety of materials, including 1-inch steel. This helps create parts with intricate designs for car engines, mounting brackets, and decorative plates. Check out this video to see the water jet in action!

The Maker Hub exists as a resource and creative outlet for the entire George Fox community (yes, including non-engineers!). We are looking for student aces. A student ace is simply an expert on a piece of equipment who helps train other students on the usage of that equipment and gains extra privileges within the Maker Hub.

Please email makerhub@georgefox.edu if you would like to get connected or have any questions.

Listen now to George Fox Talks!

Wednesday, October 6th, 2021

We need to talk. About serious things, political things, theological things, and leadership things. About our bodies and our health. About poetry and death. About God. And so we’re going to talk about it, together, as people of Christian faith, in our new podcast and YouTube video series. It’s called George Fox Talks.

Every week on Tuesday we’ll be releasing engaging content from our own George Fox community. All episodes will be full audio (podcast) and in full video (YouTube) format, with shorter clips from the conversations also released on YouTube.

Our new trailer is available now, as well as the first full episode, with physical therapy professor Daniel Kang talking with Dr. Kevin Sellars about a timely topic: resilience and recovery through physical trauma. Upcoming episodes this month will feature conversations about faith and science, leadership, and reading difficult texts.

Where will you find all of this?

Here’s how you can help us:

  1. Would you please review the podcast on Apple? This helps the show get noticed by recommendation within streaming services.
  2. Would you please subscribe to our YouTube channel? Getting to 100 subscribers will mean that we can unlock custom channel features.
  3. Most of all: Give the material a look/listen, and let us know what you think!

Questions? Contact Brian Doak, VP of George Fox Digital, at bdoak@georgefox.edu.

Want to learn more? Meet with John Brown University professor Billy Stevenson to get details and ask questions at his table in Canyon Commons this Tuesday, Oct. 12. He will be set up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. George Fox is partnering with John Brown to make this option available.

Join Mathetes’ discussion tonight on ESL experience

Wednesday, October 6th, 2021

Come to our Mathetes panel from 7 to 8:30 p.m., tonight (Thursday) in Hoover 102.

Mathetes is a safe conversational space in which students and faculty can engage with each other and learn from the experience of others in their Fox community. Our hope for this panel is that we can confront the myth that every person who is involved in higher education has the same educational experience.

This Mathetes event will unpack the experience of individuals who are English-learners (ESL), or who have experience in the language-learning environment. We hope to see you there!

Cookies and coffee will be provided!

If you have any questions, contact Victoria Prieto (vprieto17@georgefox.edu).
