We are giving away more than $2,000 worth of door prizes and awards at the Rocktoberfest Climbing Competition this Friday, Oct. 29! All students and employees are welcome to participate, and many of these prizes are randomly chosen as door prizes from among all the competitors (not just awards for the top climbers).

The cost of the competition is $10, which covers the cost of a T-shirt for each competitor. However, there are five spots available for students that need financial assistance. George Fox is once again partnering with Hillsboro Airporter to provide a shuttle service to Portland International Airport for the semester break.

Students will be expected to work directly with Hillsboro Airporter to reserve their spot. If you make your reservations with others more than 24 hours in advance, Hillsboro Airporter can group you together. Go here to reserve your spot.

Hillsboro Airporter accepts cash or credit card for payment. Parents can call Hillsboro Airporter with their credit card information to pay for their student’s fare. The company offers 24/7 service.

Have you ever heard of Lambda Pi Eta (LPH), the communications honor society that we have on campus? This is a group, affiliated with the National Communications Association, that meets periodically throughout the semester, creating opportunities for students to further their relationships with one another and grow academically.

New outdoor recreation (OREC) trips are now available for registration. This includes trips and workshops through the rest of the semester. Activities feature slacklining, mountain biking, hiking, longboarding, adventure travel, and other fun workshops!

These trips are planned and facilitated by a highly trained and certified group of student instructors. OREC trips and activities are open to any and all George Fox students. You do not need to be a member of any club or organization, nor do you have to have any prior outdoor recreation experience.

These are great opportunities to learn new skills, try new things, and meet other students. We highly encourage you to register and be a part of any of these outings and workshops that work for your schedule.

University Recreation is hosting BIPOC climb nights and women’s climb nights at the Hadlock Student Center throughout the fall semester. The next BIPOC climb night is tonight (Tuesday) from 7 to 10 p.m.

The BIPOC climb nights are for any members of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) community and allies! Join us for climbing, community, conversation, and fun. Everyone is invited! After tonight, our next climb night will be Tuesday, Nov. 16, from 7 to 10 p.m.

Join us for our “Spooky Soiree” in the Maker Hub from 7 to 10 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 30! It will be a fun evening of activities, including pumpkin laser cutting, pumpkin painting, festival games, and a photo booth!

Come dressed in your best costume to compete in a costume competition with a university-renowned panel of judges that you all know and love. Costume contest judging is from 8 to 9 p.m., followed by a dance party.

In order to promote a fun and positive environment around the Halloween and harvest party season, the Office of Student Life has a few tips on avoiding cultural appropriation in your costume choice:

• Avoid clothing that belongs to the traditions of a people group other than your own.
• Avoid anything that involves blackface, Native/Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, or Latinx representation, etc.
• Ask yourself: Why do I want to wear this costume? Could my costume be misunderstood if I don’t understand its origin or cultural context?

Not sure what cultural appropriation is? Stop by the Intercultural Resource Center (IRC) and ask D’metri, Jesse, or Katrina about it.

What’s a TCK? “Third Culture Kids” are individuals with a mixed cultural identity influenced by their parents’ culture and the culture(s) in which they were raised. Some specific examples include: minoritized individuals, bicultural/biracial, first- and second-generation immigrants, someone who lived outside their parents’ passport country, or anyone that’s culturally confused.

We are hosting a panel to highlight the differences in life experiences that exist here on campus, and to talk about navigating cultural nuances in one’s identity.

This event is open to all students and employees, so please join us at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 29, in Hoover 105!

As the weather gets cooler, squirrels, mice, and beetles will want to enter your space to set up their winter home. To discourage pests, please do the following:

1. If you leave windows open, make sure that the window screen is in excellent shape with no holes, tears, or bent frames. If you have a damaged window screen, report it to your RA for Plant Services to repair the screen. Otherwise, keep doors and windows closed.

2. Store all food in glass or metal containers with tight lids. Do not leave food out.

3. Dispose of food waste. Tie off the trash bag and place in the outside trash bin rather than leaving it in your room.

4. Report any rodent sightings to your RA for Plant Services to investigate. Be specific in your description of the location.

If a food source is available, pests will continue to check that space even after the food is gone. Seal up the food sources now before a pest makes it a habit to come visit. Beetles will naturally congregate this time of year and can be annoying. Please read the FAQ page on the Plant Services website for more information about pest control.

This fall’s Directing Class (THEA 370) is looking for student actors for our 10-minute play festival featuring 13 10-minute plays in December. We need at least 26 actors, so please come audition for us. All are welcome!

If you are cast in a 10-minute play your total time commitment will be anywhere from 15 to 20 hours. Individual rehearsals will last one to two and a half hours. Directing students will work around your schedule to find appropriate rehearsal times.

Audition Format

General auditions (Oct. 25): It’s recommended that theatre majors, minors and scholarship students prepare a fully rehearsed and memorized 90-second monologue for the audition process. Everybody else can prepare a monologue if you wish. However, if you don’t have time to find a monologue, come anyway! You can always do a cold reading from one of the monologues available at the audition sign-in table.

Call-backs (Nov. 1-3): Call-back lists for each show will be sent to all auditionees after the general audition on Oct. 26. Actors might be called back to read for one play or for many. Call-back auditions will feature cold readings from each of the plays. We will make sure that you have ample time to work with each of the directors who are interested in having you audition for their show.

Our mission is to improve our community’s health by offering discounted massages to students ($15), employees and community members ($20). We are offering a 25-minute massage on Friday, Nov. 5, from 8 to 11 a.m. in the new Medical Sciences Building (448 Werth Blvd., in Newberg).

We will be taking all the current precautions related to the delivery of healthcare during COVID-19. All proceeds will help fund our medical service trip to Uganda. Donations are also welcome. You can register here.

Join University Recreation for a glow-in-the-dark, after-hours rock-climbing night on Saturday, Oct. 30, to try out all the new competition routes that debuted on Friday, the day before. We’ll be going from 9 to 11 p.m.
