Keep these costume tips in mind for Halloween

Saturday, October 30th, 2021

To promote a fun and positive environment around the Halloween and harvest party season, the Office of Student Life has a few tips on avoiding cultural appropriation in your costume choice:

  • Avoid clothing that belongs to the traditions of a people group other than your own.
  • Avoid anything that involves blackface, Native/Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, Latinx representation, etc.
  • Ask yourself: Why do I want to wear this costume? Could my costume be misunderstood if I don’t understand its origin or cultural context?

Not sure what cultural appropriation is? Stop by the Intercultural Resource Center (IRC) and ask D’metri, Jesse or Katrina about it.

If you have any questions, please contact the student life office or the Intercultural Resource Center.
