Maker Hub’s Tool Tip Friday: Heat Press

Thursday, October 27th, 2022

Maybe a birthday is coming up, or you’re already worried about what you’re going to get your loved ones for Christmas. No need to sweat – the Maker Hub has many machines and tools to cover your gift-making needs!

The Maker Hub’s Stahls Maxx Clam Heat Press is a machine used to transfer graphics onto items like T-shirts, bags and jerseys. Materials that can be transferred include heat transfer vinyl (HTV), screen printed transfers, rhinestones and more. Within the Hub, the heat press works in conjunction with the vinyl printer/cutter as well as the dye sublimation printer. Check out this video to see how it works! For more information on how you can make a custom shirt, check out the Maker Hub’s Wiki page.

The Maker Hub exists as a resource and creative outlet for the entire George Fox community (yes, including non-engineers). We are looking for student aces. A student ace is simply an expert on a piece of equipment who helps train other students on the use of that equipment and gains extra privileges within the Maker Hub.

Please email makerhub@georgefox.edu if you would like to get connected or have any questions.

Sign up for a civil discourse on abortion

Thursday, October 27th, 2022

Would you like to experience a productive conversation about an intense issue with someone who disagrees with you – one where you both listen well and understand each other for the purpose of understanding rather than persuading, and without resorting to insults, putdowns or other hateful speech?

Are you willing to listen to the other side, and are you willing to speak to the other side with respect?

The Oregon Statewide Alliance of Braver Angels is inviting George Fox students to join with students from Lewis & Clark to talk about abortion. The online event will take place Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., via Zoom. You can sign up to be a participant or an observer here.

Questions? Ask Ron Mock, GFU’s Civility Project director, at rmock@georgefox.edu.

Braver Angels is a national organization working to reverse the trends leading to increasingly dysfunctional polarization and governmental gridlock at all levels of American politics.

Avoid cultural appropriation this Halloween

Thursday, October 27th, 2022

To promote a fun and positive environment around the Halloween and harvest party season, the Office of Student Life has a few tips on avoiding cultural appropriation in your costume choice:

  • Avoid clothing that belongs to the traditions of a people group other than your own.
  • Avoid anything that involves blackface, Native/Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, Latinx representation, etc.
  • Ask yourself: Why do I want to wear this costume? Could my costume be misunderstood if I don’t understand its origin or cultural context?
  • Not sure what cultural appropriation is? Stop by the Intercultural Resource Center (IRC) and ask D’metri, Jesse or Katrina about it.

If you have any questions, please contact the Student Life office or the Intercultural Resource Center.

Keep these things in mind during Bruin Preview

Wednesday, October 26th, 2022

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will be hosting Bruin Preview on campus Friday, Oct. 28. With around 500 visitors expected on campus, we are asking GFU students and employees to help extend the Be Known promise throughout the day. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Use street parking instead of campus parking lots. Guests will be arriving on campus Friday between 8 and 8:30 a.m. and will fill all the main campus parking lots.
  • Be mindful of guests in your housing area. We will have housing tours circulating through Edwards, Gulley, Pennington and HMS from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tour groups will be viewing dorm lobbies and a room in each dorm.
  • Plan for a busier-than-usual lunch in Canyon Commons. Guests will be going through the main server lines and will eat in the main dining area. If you see a family looking for a spot to sit, invite them to join you.
  • Sixty prospective students have opted to stay overnight on Thursday night before the main event. Be welcoming to prospective students in your on-campus living areas starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

If you have any questions, email visit@georgefox.edu or call Lauren Hill at 503-554-2245.

Author Curtis Chang speaks on campus tomorrow

Tuesday, October 25th, 2022

The Cultural Enterprise invites you to hear from author and guest speaker Curtis Chang tomorrow (Thursday). We’ll host a faculty coffee at 3 p.m. (during which he’ll discuss his recently published work on the theology of organizations) and a 7 p.m. public lecture on post-partisan faith.

Both events are in Canyon Commons, and refreshments will be served.

Faculty Coffee

Chang makes the provocative claim that human institutions participate in the Imago Dei. He argues that this insight is deeply grounded in Scripture and theology. Moreover, this central insight opens up a range of practical insights and motivations for the organizational life of all Christians, especially those working in “secular” entities.

Come hear Chang share about a robust theology of institutions, and bring your questions and thoughts!

Public Lecture: “When Politics Strains Relationships”

Have political divisions caused tension in the relationships in your family, school, church, work or community? Learn how to become a “post-partisan Christian” and how this new identity can heal our relationships – and hopefully our society. A livestream will be available here.

About Curtis Chang

Chang straddles the worlds of secular institutions and theology. As a management consultant, he has won a White House award for social innovation as the founder and head of Consulting Within Reach (CWR), a firm serving nonprofits and government agencies. He also is on the faculty of American University in Washington, D.C., where he teaches strategic planning.

As a theologian, Chang is a consulting professor at the Duke Divinity School and is a senior fellow at Fuller Theological Seminary. He currently co-hosts (with David French) the Good Faith podcast, which is ranked in the top 1% of all podcasts.

Contact Sarah Taylor at taylors@georgefox.edu for more information about his visit.
