You can register through IMLeagues (where you register for all intramural leagues on campus). The tournament takes place on Saturday, Feb. 26 (time TBD), and the winning team gets $120 to share!

Seniors in the kinesiology department are conducting research on indoor versus outdoor physical activity and its effects on mood, strength performance, and aerobic performance. We are in need of volunteers to participate in our study.

Participants will be asked to meet on two different occasions to perform a brief physical activity: once indoors in the Hadlock Student Center, and once outdoors on the track. Participants are asked to be between 18 and 22 years of age and in good health. Both male and female individuals are welcome.

Exercise science seniors are conducting a research study testing the effects of sugar consumption on anaerobic power output and cognitive function.

Come hear Mustafa Akyol’s talk, “An Islamic Case for Freedom and Tolerance: Ancient Wisdom for a Modern Crisis,” at 6:30 p.m. this Monday, Feb. 21, in Hoover 105.

Mustafa is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute’s Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity, a frequent opinion writer for The New York Times, and the author of multiple books, including Reopening Muslim Minds: A Return to Reason, Freedom, and Tolerance (2021). The talk is free and open to the general public.

Paul Anderson’s Life Group (“Margaret Fell: The Mother of Quakerism”) is meeting on Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. in a hybrid format. There are still a few openings, so be sure to sign up if interested!

The group will be followed by a seminar (“Discerning Vocation: Embracing Life’s Purpose”) on Saturday, April 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Paul’s home. The Saturday seminar has received a small grant, giving students a $100 stipend for participating (limit of 15 students). A sign-up link (first come, first served) is here.

What emotion often disrupts your life, negatively impacts those closest to you, or keeps you from experiencing intimacy in relationships? Is it paralyzing fear, red-hot anger, or deep sadness? Our emotions offer vitality for life, but we must learn to listen, feel, and befriend them.

This Friday, Feb. 18, join Michael Simmons for an online course, “Companioning Our Shadow: Emotions & Relationships.” Michael will explore practices and tools for encountering Christ in our shadow, and bring wholeness to our emotional life.

Michael is a spiritual director and retreat facilitator, and serves on the Companioning Center leadership team. He is a doctoral student at Portland Seminary, and an ordained elder in the Free Methodist Church.

The course is offered virtually via Zoom from 9 to 11 a.m. The cost is $39, and the Zoom link will be provided. You can register here.

Tomorrow (Wednesday), at 7 p.m. in Hoover 105, the School of Theology has the distinct pleasure of hosting what promises to be a lively and engaging conversation between George Fox professor Phil Smith and Frederick Bauerschmidt, a professor of theology at Loyola University, on the virtue of faith.

Smith and Bauerschmidt will discuss the virtue of faith – what it is and why it matters – from not just their own distinct disciplines, but also by drawing explicitly from their Quaker and Catholic perspectives, respectively.

The night will be informal and geared toward the questions and concerns of those present. We hope to see you there! Chapel credit is available for students.
