IDEA Center has a new name: Career & Academic Planning Center

Monday, March 21st, 2022

We are excited to announce that the name of the IDEA Center is changing today (Tuesday) to the Career & Academic Planning Center! The change is being made in an effort to more accurately reflect the mission, vision and purpose of our department as part of the George Fox community.

Our commitment to serving students, staff and faculty remains our highest priority. The quality and scope of the work we do remains unchanged. We are here to:

  • Assist students with their academic planning to ensure a timely completion of all graduation requirements
  • Identify skills and develop materials needed to be an excellent candidate for future careers
  • Provide comprehensive academic and professional development resources for faculty to utilize in class across disciplines
  • Collaborate with external partners to create value-added professional experiences to enhance student learning and development

We’re excited to continue our efforts to partner with faculty in creating stronger academic planning and professional development support for our students. Have questions? Check out our new website or contact Logan Walton at dwalton@georgefox.edu.

Reminder about the difference between recycling and trash bins on campus

Thursday, March 17th, 2022

The bins with yellow lids on campus are for recycling only. Please avoid placing trash in the recycling bins. Bins designated for garbage have black lids.

If a garbage bin is already full, please place your trash in a different garbage bin in order to avoid overflowing the bin. Do not place trash on the ground by the bin, as the service driver will not pick up anything outside of a bin.

Following these guidelines will ensure that the recycling gets recycled and that the trash bins are not avoided by the waste company. Thank you!

Maker Hub’s ‘Tool Tip Friday’: Power Carver

Thursday, March 17th, 2022

Have you ever had the desire to carve an owl inside a branch? Or how about something more reasonable like a custom wood sign? The Maker Hub’s Foredom Power Carver can help you do just that!

The power carver consists of a hand piece that is driven by a motor. The motor is connected via a flexible shaft that allows easy movement of the hand piece without the weight of the motor. There are many cutting tools available for use with the hand piece.

Some of the uses include sanding, carving and cutting. The most common uses are creating custom designs in wood and polishing small projects. Check out this video to see how it works. For more information, check out the Maker Hub’s Wiki page.

The Maker Hub exists as a resource and creative outlet for the entire George Fox community (yes, including non-engineers). We are looking for student aces. A student ace is simply an expert on a piece of equipment who helps train other students on the usage of that equipment and gains extra privileges within the Maker Hub.

Please email makerhub@georgefox.edu if you would like to get connected or have any questions.
