Join discussion on Russia and Ukraine tonight in Hoover 105

Tuesday, March 29th, 2022

Two people with extended experience in Russia and Ukraine will visit campus tonight (Wednesday) to discuss what civility might look like in the Russia/Ukraine relationship. The session will be in Hoover 105 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Johan Maurer lived in Russia for 10 years, teaching English and working with Quaker meetings in that country. Stu Willcuts has decades of experience delivering aid to crisis-torn nations, including in Ukraine after the Russian invasion of the Crimea and Donbas regions of eastern Ukraine.

War is the worst-case scenario when civility breaks down. Maurer and Willcuts will share their perceptions of what caused such a catastrophic breakdown between Russia and Ukraine. Did they ever enjoy a civil, productive relationship? How did the relationship deteriorate? What effects has it had? Is there a path toward building a constructive, civil relationship?

The public is welcome. A Zoom link will be available; watch for it on the Civility Project website. If you have questions, contact project director Ron Mock at civility@georgefox.edu.

Extend the Be Known promise to Bruin Preview guests this Friday

Tuesday, March 29th, 2022

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will be hosting Bruin Preview on campus this Friday, April 1. With around 500 visitors expected on campus, we are asking students and employees to help extend the Be Known promise throughout the day. Here’s what you can keep in mind:

  • Use street parking instead of campus parking lots. Guests will be arriving on campus Friday morning between 8 and 8:30 a.m. and will fill all the main campus parking lots.
  • Be mindful of guests in your housing area. We will have housing tours circulating through Edwards, Gulley, Pennington, and HMS from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tour groups will be viewing dorm lobbies and a room on the first floor of each dorm.
  • Plan for a busier-than-usual Canyon Commons. Guests will be going through the main servery line and will eat in the main dining area. If you see a family looking for a spot to sit, invite them to join you!
  • For the first time in two years, a small group of 40 prospective students will be staying overnight on Thursday night! Be prepared for prospective students to be in on-campus living areas starting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday night.

If you have questions, feel free to email visit@georgefox.edu or call Lauren Hill at 503-554-2245.

Come to Aaron Sullivan’s biology candidate research talk tomorrow

Tuesday, March 29th, 2022

All are invited to listen to our biology faculty candidate, Aaron Sullivan, present his research tomorrow at 3 p.m.(Thursday) in Hoover 105. He will speak on “Unsettled Salamanders: How stress and predation risk shape anti-predator behavior.”

Much of Sullivan’s research in behavioral ecology is related to predator-prey interactions and chemical communication. In general, he examines how prey species utilize chemical cues in their environment to evaluate predation risk. However, responses to predator stimuli may be complicated by the recent experience and internal state of an individual.

In this talk, he will highlight how chemically-mediated responses to predators are impacted by factors such as caudal autotomy and exogenous sources of stress.
