University is hiring graduate students as academic mentors

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2022

Rick Muthiah, director of Learning Support Services, is recruiting three or four graduate students to work as academic mentors for high-risk students on the Newberg campus during the fall 2022 semester.

Academic mentors will work seven to 10 hours per week, and will be paid $14.75 per hour. Students can find more details and application information on the HandShake position posting. The position is open to any George Fox graduate student, including incoming students.

Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. Academic mentors will have the opportunity to continue in the spring semester based on their availability and ongoing need for the program.

Past success coaches have commented on how much they grew through the experience, especially through their one-on-one sessions with high-risk students. The role is not a formal counseling role, but has similarities that can be especially helpful for graduate students who will be entering helping professions.

Please contact Rick Muthiah (rmuthiah+mentor@georgefox.edu) if you have questions.

Some important parking updates for the fall semester

Monday, June 6th, 2022

As summer progresses we will be issuing updates to parking and registration for the upcoming school year. Registration for new permits will open up mid-late July. Keep an eye out for email and Daily Bruin notices for updated information.

This fall at George Fox will bring changes to parking that will result in fewer spaces to park. We strongly encourage you to carefully consider if you need to have a vehicle on campus. Riding a bike and carpooling are good alternatives to bringing a vehicle, and since our campus is centrally located, it puts us within easy walking distance to a multitude of shopping and entertainment options.

The Morse lot is a little-known option for parking for both residents and commuters. We strongly encourage you to utilize this option. Nighttime escorts are available from the Morse lot by contacting the Campus Public Safety office.

What to do when registration opens up for the fall semester:

  • Returning students: You will not need a new parking permit if you still have the same vehicle and residency status as last year. However, if you have changed your status from resident to commuter or vice versa, or are bringing a different vehicle to campus, you will need to register for a new parking permit.
  • New students: You will need to register your vehicle at mygeorgefox.edu under “Campus Resources”

If you have any questions, contact Karen Toohey at 503-554-2091. Have a great summer, and we look forward to seeing you in the fall!
